Historical Description

TARLETON is a township, parish and village on the old road from Liverpool to Preston, 9 ½ miles south-west from Preston, 8 ½ north from Ormskirk, and 2 south from Hesketh Bank station on the West Lancashire railway, in the Chorley division of the county, Leyland hundred, Ormskirk union and county court district, Leyland hundred and petty sessional divison, rural deanery of Leyland, archdeaconry of Blackburn and diocese of Manchester. A branch of the Leeds and Liverpool canal skirts the township and the river Douglas passes through it. The church of the Holy Trinity with St. John, erected in 1888, at a cost of £6,000, is a building of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, and consists of chancel, nave and aisles: the reredos of Bath stone was the gift of Mrs. Rawcliffe: the organ was presented by Miss Kennedy: there are 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1719 for all entries. The living is a rectory and vicarage, net yearly value £600, including 84 acres of glebe, shooting rents and residence, in the gift of and held since 1875 by the Ven. Robert Crompton Fletcher M.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, archdeacon of Blackburn, and surrogate. The” Curacy house” was built A.D. 1729 for the curate of Tarleton, with Mrs. Margaret Thompson’s legacy. The rectory house was built about 1854 by the Rev. M. Fletcher, late rector. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, built in 1898, and seating 350. The poor have £19 yearly, distributed in cotton cloth, from Layfield and Crook’s charities. Lord Lilford is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loamy and mossy; the subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and potatoes. The area, is 5,523 acres of land and 22 of water; rateable value, £10,129; the population in 1901 was 1,800.
