Historical Description
TRAWDEN is a village and township: part of the township was formed into an ecclesiastical parish Aug. 5, 1845, from the civil parish of Whalley, and is 2 miles south-east from Colne station on the Accrington and Skipton section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 6 from Burnley and 12 from Skipton, in the Clitheroe division of the county, Colne petty sessional division, higher division of Blackburn hundred, Burnley, union, Colne county court district and rural deanery of Burnley, archdeaconry of Blackburn and diocese of Manchester. The township adopted the “Local Government Act, 1858,” March 10, 1863, but under the provisions of the Act of 1894 it is now governed by an Urban District Council. The church of St. Mary, erected in 1845, is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower with one bell: there are brasses to Mrs. Catherine Humfrey, of Carry Bridge, near Colne, d. 1855: the Rev. Thomas Craven Humfrey, 30 years vicar of the parish, d. 1875, and his wife Mary, d. 1872; the stained east window is a memorial to Mrs. Mary Humfrey: there, is a carved reredos of Caen stone, given in 1876 by Canon A. T. Parker M.A. rector of Burnley: the church was reseated and improved in 1882 at a cost of £600; the whole of the windows were re-glazed in 1885, at a cost of £100: there are sittings for 500 persons. The register dates from the year 1840. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £194, with residence and three acres of glebe, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Manchester alternately, and held since 1899 by the Rev. John Proctor Petty M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There are Wesleyan, Free Gospel and Primitive Methodist chapels. Here is a cemetery, formerly belonging to the Society of Friends, and dating from 1688, but opened about 1858 for the use of Dissenters generally: is is now the joint property of several gentlemen. The Duke of Buccleuch K.G., K.T. is lord of the manor. Richard Sagar esq. and the trustees of the late Thomas Barroclough esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is clay; the subsoil clay and rock, and the land is principally in pasture. The area of civil parish and Urban district 6,785 acres of land and 30 of water; rateable value, £11,249; the population in 1901 was 2,641, of the ecclesiastical parish, 1,968.
