Historical Description

TUNSTAL is a parish and township, 2 miles north-north-east from Melling station on the Midland and Furness and 4 south-west from Kirkby Lonsdale station on the London and North Western railways, 13 north-east from Lancaster and 244 from London, in the Lancaster division of the county, petty sessional division of Hornby, hundred of Lonsdale (south of the Sands), union of Lunesdale, Kirkby Lonsdale county court district, rural deanery of Tunstal, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The river Lune passes through part of the parish, and the river Greta flows on the east and south. The church of St John the Baptist, built in 1414, is an edifice of stone in the Late Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the east window is stained: the church was repaired in 1850 and contains numerous ancient monuments of the Fenwick family, of Burrow Hall: in the chancel is the mutilated stone effigy of a knight in armour, believed to represent Sir Thomas Tunstal (knighted in 1426), the founder of Thurland Castle: there are sittings for 300. The register dates from the year 1620 and is in good preservation. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £260, including glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held, since 1898, by the Rev. James Atkinson Burrow B.A. of St John’s College, Cambridge. The principal landowner is Eric Brown Lees esq. J.P. of Thurland Castle, who is lord of the manor. The soil is loam; subsoil, gravel. The land is chiefly used for grazing. The area of the township is 934 acres of land and 48 of wate; rateable value, £1,494; and the population in 1901 was 122. The population of the parish, including townships, in 1901 was 413 in the parish of St. John, Tunstal, and is 211 in the parish of St. Peter, Leck.

Public Elementary School, Tunstal, erected in 1871 & enlarged in 1896, for 80 children; average attendance, 52.
