Historical Description
TYLDESLEY is a town on the high road from Leigh to Manchester, formed into a parish, June 15, 1828, from the civil parish of Leigh, and the old township of Tyldesley-cum-Shakepley, 2 ½ miles east-north-east from Leigh, 5 south-west from Bolton, 11 north-west from Manchester and 199 from London, in the Leigh division of the county and petty sessional division, West Derby hundred, Leigh union and county court district, rural deanery of Eccles, archdeaconry and diocese of Manchester. There is a station at Tyldesley ch the Manchester, Eccles and Wigan section of the London and North Western railway, and a branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway from Pendleton and Hindley passes through Shakerley on the north side of the town. It is also connected by electric tramway with Leigh, Bolton and Atherton. The town adopted the “Local Government Act, 1858,” but under the “Local Government Act, 1894,” the township is now governed by an Urban District Council, and lighted with gas from works the property of the council, who also control the water supply. The district for Urban purposes it divided into five wards. The church of St. George, built in the year 1825, is an edifice of stone in the Early Pointed style, from designs by Sydney Smirke esq. R.A. and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, western porch and a western tower, with pinnacles and a lofty spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: there are eleven memorial windows: in 1886 the church was thoroughly restored and reseated, a new chancel erected, and the west gallery taken down, at a cost of about £5,000: there are 814 sittings, of Which 576 are free. The register dates from the year 1825. The living is a vicarage, neb yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester, and held since 1884 by the Rev. John Lund M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. A new vicarage house was erected in 1902. St. John’s ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1895. The church at Mosley Common, and originally erected in 1886 as a chapel of ease, at a cost of £4,000, on a site presented by the Earl of Ellesmere, is a building of Yorkshire stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, vestry and south porch: the church will seat about 500 persons. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £133, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Joseph Morris, previously curate in charge here, 1883-85. A Catholic school chapel, dedicated to the Holy Family, was erected in 1896, at Craddock Lane, Boothstown, at a cost of about £2,000. The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1886, at a cost of £3,800, will seat 800 persons. There are other places of worship. A cemetery of 9a. 2r. 4p. with three mortuary chapels, was formed in 1878, at a cost of £13,000: it is under the control of the Urban Council. The Miners’ Hall in Elliott street, is a commodious structure, erected in 1893, at a cost of over £3,000, and will seat about 750 persons. The Public Baths, Union street, erected at a cost of £1,500 on land given by Lady Cotton, were opened July, 1876. The swimming bath was enlarged and other improvements effected in 1898, at a further cost of about £1,200. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in cotton mills and collieries, but there are also two iron foundries. The charities amount to about £20 yearly value. In the division of Tyldesley called, “the Higher-side,” is a reputed manor, vested in the Earl of Ellesmere. One of the chief landowners in Tyldesley is the Rev. George Thomas Bailey Ormerod M.A., D.C.L, of Stroud, Gloucestershire, and the greater portion of the town of Tyldesley stands entirely upon his estate. Mrs. Charlotte Ann Wynne-Corrie, of Park House, Oswestry, is also a landowner in the parish. The soil is, clay, resting on rook. The chief crops are grass and wheat. The area of the civil parish and Urban District is 2,479 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £75,569. The population in 1901 was 14,843.
