URSWICK is a large parish in Low Furness, in the North Lonsdale division of the county hundred of Lonsdale (north of the Sands), Ulverston union and county court district, petty sessional division of North Lonsdale, rural deanery of Ulverston, archdeaconry of Furness and diocese of Carlisle; the parish is divided for parochial purposes into four districts or townships, viz.: Much Urswick, Little Urswick, Bardsca/and Adgarley with Stainton; Bardsea will be found under a separate head; Much Urswick is prettily seated in a valley on the margin of a lake or tarn, about 3 miles south from Ulverston, the same distance north-east from Dalton, 1 ¾ east from the Lindal station on the Furness railway and 7 east from Barrow-in-Furness. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, anciently called St. Mary-in-the-Fields, is situated between the villages of Much and Little Urswick. and is an ancient building in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, vestry and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells, one of which is inscribed” Maria Guilemus de Harryngton, Dominus de Aldingham et Domina Margareta uxor ejus” (this William de Harrington succeeded to the manor of AldIngham on the death of his brother John in 1417), and the bell must therefore be at least 450 years old; in the tower are three niches, two of which are unoccupied; in the third is a matilated group of St. Mary the Virgin bearing the dead Christ; there is also a monumental slab with a floriated cross in relief, on one side of which is a pair of shears and on the other an inscription of the 13th or 14th century, to Amicia, daughter of John le Francys: in the windows are the arms of Furness Abbey and those of the Harrington and other families connected with the abbey, and there are several memorial windows: near the chancel door is a piscina: the south doorway is Early Norman, and the door-key is a large and remarkably fine example of mediteval iron work: the communion plate dates from 1571: there are sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1603 and is in fair condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £170, including 10 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the resident landowners, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Thomas Norton Postlethwaite B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. In the neighbourhood are mines, producing iron ore. Hawkfield, now a farm house, incorporates portions of Bolton chapel, an ancient structure dating from the reign of Henry III. There are two manors in the parish; that of Muchland belongs to the Crown and that of Bolton with Adgarley to the Earl of Derby K.G. The principal landowners are the Earl of Derby, John Oroudson esq. Malachi James Cranke esq. Mrs. George Remington, Captain Henry Richmond Hoghton Gale, of Bardsea Hall. Ulverston, and Mrs. Robert N. Todd-Newcomb, of Banlcfield. The soil is light loam and clay; subsoil, clay and alluvial in parts. The chief crops are barley and root crops. The area of the parish is 3,884 acres of land and 15 of water; rateable value, £9,983; the population in 1901 was 1,186 in the civil and 898 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Urswick Stone walls, the foundations of which still exist, are supposed to have been part of a British fortress; in the neighbourhood are the remains of two Roman camps and a Druidical circle.

Redmayne Hall, of which the Tudor chimneys still remain, was formerly the residence of the Redmans; some 40 years back the hall was converted into a farmhouse.

School, Little Urswick (mixed), with an endowment of £15 yearly derived from land & managed by a body of 12 co-optative governors; the school will hold 250 children; average attendance, 145.
