Historical Description

The small village of Winwick, remarkable for being the seat of the richest rectory in England. It is so described by Camden, who adds a notice of the following lines, in a barbarous character, on the top of the church:

"Flic locus, Oswalde quondam tibi placuit tibi vaide, Northanhumbrorum fueras rex, nuncque polorum, Regna tenes, loco passus marcelde vocato."

Thus translated:

"Oswald, this ground was grateful found

To thee, whose hand Northumberland

Late ruled, now owns celestial thrones,

In marcelde field thou life didst yield."

To the lines given by Mr. Camden as above, are now added:

"Sclatur post Christum murum renoverat istum;

Henricus Johnson curatus erat simul hic tunc."

The parish of Winwick is large and fertile; and the whole township, except an estate, consists of glebe land belonging to the church; the rector being lord of the manor. This valuable living is under the patronage of the Earl of Derby, and is supposed to be worth at present near 30001. per annum. The church is an ancient structure, with a spire steeple, forming a conspicuous object from a great distance; Dr. Sherlock, father of the bishop of London of that name, died rector of this place in 1689. Throughout the whole parish of Winwick there is much spinning of cotton and flax.

Newton in Winwick parish was formerly a small market town. Leland describes it: "on a brook a little poor market, whereof Mr. Langton has the name of his barony. Sir Perse Lee of Bradley hath his place at Bradley in a park two miles from Newton." It still retains the privilege of sending two representatives to parliament, being an ancient borough by prescription, governed by a steward, bailiff, and burgesses. The right of election is supposed to be in the burgesses who are occupiers of certain tenements, their number amounting to about thirty-six; but there is no resolution of the House of Commons respecting it. The steward of the lord of the manor, and the bailiff, are the returning officers. The first contested election since the early part of the reign of Queen Elizabeth, happened in the year 1797, when Mr. Langford Brooke was returned by the independent part against the interest of the family of Haydock in this parish, and Lyme in Cheshire, who were supposed to have had the absolute command of the borough.

Newton had formerly a market on Saturday, which is now discontinued.

In this town there is a good Charity School, where about eighty boys and girls are educated at the expense of the lord of the manor. There is also another Charity School, founded in 1707, by one Hornby, a yeoman of the place.

Newton participates in all the advances of the inland navigation of the county.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WINWICK is a village and parish, on the road from Warrington to Newton-le-Willows, 3 miles north from Warrington and 2 south from Newton-le-Willows junction on the London and North Western railway, in the Newton division of the county, Warrington petty sessional division, hundred of West Derby, Warrington union and county court district, rural deanery of Winwick, archdeaconry of Warrington and diocese of Liverpool. The Sankey canal passes through the lower end of the village. The church of St. Oswald is a building of stone, dating from pre-Norman times, and consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles two chapels, porches and an embattled western tower with octagonal spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel was rebuilt in 1847, under the direction of the late Mr. A. Welby Pugin, architect; and in 1858 the church underwent further considerable alterations: the stained west window is a memorial to the Rev. James John Hornby M.A. late rector; the stained east window was given by Edward, 13th Earl of Derby K.G., F.L.S.; all the other windows of the chancel are also stained, the chancel itself being fitted with oak stalls, adorned with carvings in wood and stone and has an oak roof splendidly illuminated: the entrance to the Gerrard chapel is adorned with the crest of that family and grotesque carving: in the Legh chapel there are brasses and monuments to Sir Peter Legh and his wife, with other members of this family, and in the chancel in an obituary window to James, 7th Earl of Derby K.G. beheaded 15 October, 1651: in the vestry is on oaken bench, carved with shields of the Lathams and Stanleys, and in the Gerard chapel, a brass to Piers Gerrard esq. son of Sir Thomas Gerard kt. who died 19 June, 1485: there are also several brasses and mural tablets to the Hornby family including one to the Rev. Geoffrey Hornby, a former rector, d 31 July, 1812, and to the Hon. Lucy Hornby, his wife, d 10 February, 1833; there is also a brass to Richard Sherlock D.D. a fomer rector, d. 20 June, 1689: a stained “Jesse” window has been erected in memory of the late rector, the Rev. Canon Hopwood M.A. d. 1890, at a cost of about £300, raised by parishioners and friends, and a memorial brass placed in the by his children: a lectern to the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Comber of Myddleton Hall, was erected in 1904: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £1,400, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Derby P.C. and held since 1890 by the Rev. Canon Oswald Henry Leycester Penrhyn M.A. of Balliol College Oxford, Hon. Canon of Liverpool and rural dean of Winwick. The Rectory house was built in 1887, at a cost of £5,000. Winwick Hall, till 1890 the glebe house and residence of the rector, is in Winwick park, which adjoins the village and is now used as a home for 50 imbecile children.

During the civil war, Winwick was the scene of two encounters between the Royal and Parliamentary forces, first in 1643, when a body of Cavaliers were routed by the Roundheads, under Col. Ashton; and again in 1648, when Cromwell met and defeated James, Duke of Hamilton K.G. The Warrington Corporation Water Works have a pumping station here. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners have been lords of the manor since 1890, under Act of Parliament, dated August 7, 1884, the rector having previously owned the manor by virtue of the glebe occupying nearly all the parish. The poor have £18 yearly in bread and clothing. The soil is chiefly a sandy loam; subsoil, in some parts clay, in others, sand, on a substratum of red sandstone. The crops are principally oats, wheat and potatoes. The area of the township of Winwick With Hulme is 2,063 acres of land and 18 of water; rateable value, £22,593; the population in 1901 was 1,253 in the civil, and 809 in the ecclesiastical parish.

The County Asylum, with accommodation for 2,000 adults, received only from the other Lancashire asylums, was opened in January, 1902; it stands on 206 acres and has a recreation hall 120 feet by 60 feet and is lighted throughout by electricity; the asylum has 2,050 beds; Alexander Simpson M.A., M.D., C.M.Aberd. medical superintendent; Albert Irwin Eades L.R.C.P. & S.Irel.
