Historical Description

WRAY-WITH-BOTTON is a village and township close to the junction of the Hindburn and Roeburn streams, and was formed into an ecclesiastical district in 1842, and into a parish in 1863, from the civil parish of Melling; it is 1 mile east from Hornby station on the Skipton and Lancaster section of the Midland railway and 10 miles north-east from Lancaster, in the Lancaster division of the county, petty sessional division of Hornby, hundred of Lonsdale (south of the Sands), Lunesdale union, Lancaster county court district, rural deanery of Tunstal, archdeaconry of Lancaster and diocese of Manchester. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1840, is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and a western turret containing 2 bells: the chancel, organ chamber and vestry were added in 1880, at a cost of about £1,300: two stained windows were placed in 1901: the stained east window is a joint memorial of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria and of the 60th anniversary of the consecration of the church: one other window was the gift of Mr. and Miss Scrambler, of Settle, in memory of their parents: the church affords 234 sittings. The register dates from the year 1863. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £175, with residence, in the gift of five trustees, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Charles Lavington Reynolds M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel, a Friends’ meeting house and a Free Methodist chapel, built in 1867. Fairs for cattle are held on Shrove Tuesday. Col. William Henry Foster, of Hornby Castle, who is lord of the manor, Col. Joseph Lawson Whalley, of Lancaster, and Charles Morley Saunders esq. of Wennington Hall, Lancaster, are the chief landowners. The soil is gravelly; subsoil, clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. The acreage is 6,526, of which 31 are water; rateable value, £4,020; the population of the civil parish in 1901 was 499, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 547.

Public Elementary School (mixed), endowed by the will of Cant Pooley, of Wray, bearing date 1685, with about £64 yearly, & rebuilt in 1885, at a cost of £600, governed by 1 ex-officio, 3 co-optative & 5 representative, for 120 children; average attendance, 102.
