Historical Description
Barrow-upon-Soar, a large and pleasant village, containing 231 houses. Here is an hospital, founded by the Rev. Dr. Humphrey Babington, for six poor men. Barrow has for several centuries been famed for a hard blue stone, which being calcined, makes a very fine lime, and that a hard, firm, and much esteemed cement, which is in particular request for water works, making dams, flood-gates, &c. and is exported to Holland, and other places, in large quantities. Mr. Marshall observes, "it is an interesting fact, that the stone from which the Barrow lime is burnt, is in colour, texture, and quality of component parts, the same as the clay stone of Gloucestershire, from which the stonglime of that district is burnt; and what is still more remarkable, it is found in similar situations, and deposited in thin strata, divided by thicker seams of calcareous matter; affording fourteen grains of an impalpable tenacious silt, which seems to be possessed of some singular properties, forming a subject well entitled to future enquiry. One hundred grains of the clay contains 46 grains of calcareous matter, leaving 54 grains of residuum, a fine clay. Hence this earth, which at present lies an incumbrance in the quarries, is richer in calcarosity than the clay marl of the hundreds of Norfolk, with which very valuable improvements are made. In the vale of Belvoir is a similar stone, producing the same kind of lime." The Barrow stone lies in thin strata; the first under the surface is of a yellowish colour, and below this are several others of a blue colour; the latter strata are about six inches thick, and two feet asunder; both sorts are dug out, piled up in the form of a cone. Mr. Young, in his "Annals of Agriculture," remarks, that the Barrow lime, with all its reputation, can never come into general use, from the central situation of the place, &c. but as the river Soar is now made navigable through this parish, and having a communication directly with the Trent, and thence to Liverpool, Hull, and other sea-ports, the lime-stone may be readily and cheaply conveyed to all parts of the kingdom. In making Ramsgate pier, the Barrow lime-stone was carried to that place, and there burnt, and made into mortar, by a Barrow mason: and was found to succeed, after the Dutch terras mortar had failed.
BARROW-ON-SOAR is a township, parish and union town, on the river Soar, which is navigable, and affords water communication with all parts of the kingdom, with a station on the Midland railway, 3 miles south-east from Loughborough, 10 north from Leicester, 19 ½ south-east from Derby, 17 ½ south from Nottingham and 112 ¾ miles from London, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of East Goscote, petty sessional division and county court district of Loughborough, rural deanery of East Akeley, archdeaconry of Leicester and diocese of Peterborough. The village is lighted with gas by the Quorn and Mountsorrel Gas Company and supplied with water by the Corporation of Leicester from works in the parish of Swithland. In 1884, by Local Government Beard Order, Mountsorrel North End was amalgamated with this parish. The church of the Holy Trinity is a building of granite and partly in the Early Decorated style, but chiefly Perpendicular, and consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, aisles and transepts and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells, dated 1642 (two), 1620, 1692 and 1832 and rehung in 1870: there is a memorial window to William Wentworth Heude M.D. Surgeon-Major H.M. Madras Army, erected in 1872: the stained east window, erected in 1889 by Lieut.-Gen. Edward Ohippdndall C.B. is a memorial to Theophilus Cave, benefactor of the living (ob. 1656), Humphrey Babington, founder of the hospital (ob. 1669), and William Beveridge, bishop of St. Asaph, who was born in this parish (ob. 1708): the armorial bearings of the above, together with those of St. John’s College, Cambridge, form part of the design: there are monuments in the chancel to Henry Cave, of Barrow, dated 1600, who married Phillipa, daughter of Robert Braham, of Barrow; also one to Theophilus Cave, gent, dated 1584: new oaken gates for the south porch have been presented in 1898 by Lieut.-Gen. Chippendall: the chancel was entirely rebuilt in 1862 by the trustees of Barrow Hospital, who are the lay impropriators; and the church was completely restored in 1870, and re-opened 1 Nov. in that year: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £340, derived chiefly from 199 acres of glebe, value £240, with residence, in the gift of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Francis Drake Thomson M.A. and formerly fellow of that college. Here is a Catholic chapel, erected in 1839, and dedicated to St. Alban: it is served by the clergy of the Catholic cathedral of St. Barnabas, at Nottingham; there are also Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and General Baptist chapels. The cemetery, formed in 1893, covers half an acre of land: it has a mortuary chapel, and is under the control of the Parish Council. There are charities of £900 annual value, including hospitals or almshouses for eleven aged men, each of whom receives 7s. a week and for eight aged women, each receiving 6s. a week. The burning of lime, obtained from the lower lias formation, which underlies a large portion of the parish, is extensively carried on here, and many interesting fossils have been found. The hosiery manufactory of Messrs. Black and Drivel affords employment to a large number of hands. This parish was the birthplace in 1637 or 1638 of William Beveridge D.D. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, prebendary of St. Paul’s and Canterbury, and bishop of St. Asaph, 1704—8; his grandfather, father and brother were successively vicars here, and he himself was for some time vicar of Ealing and rector of St. Peter’s, Cornhill; he died in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey, 5 March, 1708, and was buried in St. Paul’s. Barrowcliff is the residence of James Wright esq. Edward Handley Warner esq. of Quorn Hall, who is lord of the manor, George Braund esq. Geo. W. Peach esq. of Langley Hall, and the trustees of the Barrow Hospital are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area of the township is 2,463 acres of land and 36 of water; rateable value, £15,870; the population in 1891 was, in the township, 2,245, and in the ecclesiastical parish, 2,217.
