Historical Description

BARSBY is a village and lordship in Ashby Folville parish, 5 miles east-by-south from Syston station on the Leicester and Peterborough branch of the Midland railway, 3 ½ east-by-north from John O’Gaunt station on the Great Northern and London and North Western joint railway, 10 north-east from Leicester and 7 ½ south-west from Melton Mowbray, in the Eastern division of the county, East Goscote hundred, Melton Mowbray union, petty sessional division and county court district and diocese of Peterborough. Barsby lordship is within the soke of Rothley. By Local Government Board Order a detached part of Ashby Folville and South Croxton were in 1884 transferred to Barsby, and at the same date a detached part of Barsby was annexed to South Croxton. The inhabitants attend the church at Ashby Folville, but there is a Church Mission room, erected here in 1887, and a Wesleyan chapel. The poor have £27 yearly in clothing from Woollaston’s charity. The principal landowners are Mrs. Cheney, of Gaddesby, James Edwards esq. and John H. Lee esq. The soil is clayey; subsoil, sand. The land is almost entirely in grass; Stilton cheese is extensively made. The acreage is 1,147; rateable value, £1,773; the population in 1891 was 188.
