Historical Description

KEYHAM is a village, township and chapelry, in Rothley parish, about miles north-west from Ingarsby station on the Peterborough and Leicester branch of the Great Northern railway and 6 east-by-north from Leicester, in the Eastern division of the county. East Goscote hundred, Billesdon union, petty sessional division and county court district of Leicester, rural deanery of Goscote (second portion), archdeaconry of Leicester and diocese of Peterborough. The church of AH Saints is a small but ancient edifice, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells, dated 1705 and 1784: during the gale of 24 March, 1895, the four pinnacles were blown down and considerably damaged the roof: in 1898 a memorial window was placed in the church to the late Mr. Boger Miles, and an organ chamber and chancel screen erected by T. A. Cook esq. at a cost of £120: there are 124 sittings. The register dates from the year 1574. The living is a chapelry, annexed with Caldwell and Wykeham to the vicarage of Rothley, joint net yearly value £390, including 236 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1870 by the Rev. Richard Bui ton M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford, who resides at Rothley. There is a small charity, left by Mrs. Freeman in 1877, producing about £13 yearly, which sum is distributed amongst the poor by the vicar and churchwardens. The Old Hall is occupied by Col. H. Cholmondeley. Frederick Merttens esq. of Rothley Temple, is lord of the manor. W. F. Miles esq. of Netherhall, the vicar of Rothley and W. H. Gatty esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and gravel; subsoil, clayey. The chief crops are wheat and beans. The area is 943 acres; rateable value, £1,569; the population in 1891 was 137.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 4 April, 1884; W. E. Beasley, 8 Friar lane, Leicester, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed & infants), built in 1885, at a cost of £420, for 45 children & 14 infants; average attendance, 30 boys & 10 infants.
