Historical Description
OADBY is a township, parish and large village, pleasantly situated on the road from Leicester to Market Harborough, 2 miles north-east from Wigston station on the Midland railway, 3 ½ south-east from Leicester, and 11 ½ north-west from Harborough, in the Southern division of the county, Guthlaxton hundred, Blaby union, Leicester petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Gartree (second portion), archdeaconry of Leicester and diocese of Peterborough. The village consists principally of one long street. By the “Leicester Extension Act, 1891,” a part of Knighton parish was added to Oadby. The church of St. Peter is a building of stone of the Decorated period, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower with hexagonal spire containing a clock and 4 bells, dated 1600, 1616 and 1714; the south porch was added in 1875: in 1887—8 the church was extensively repaired, the chancel new-roofed, repaved and a reredos added and a south aisle and vestry erected at a cost of £2,250: there are memorial windows to Mrs. T. M. Evans and Mrs. Howard and 368 sittings, of which 233 are free. The register dates from the year 1651 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £240, with residence and including 110 acres of glebe, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Isaac Raine L. Th. of Durham University. There are Baptist and Free Methodist chapels. A new Baptist chapel was erected in 1898, at a cost of £2,300, on ground given by Mrs. Rachael Ellis. The Oadby Working Men’s Club is an edifice of red brick with stone dressings, and there is also a United Club and Institute. In 1892 Thomas Merritt Evans left £500, the interest of which is to be divided amongst the deserving poor of 65 years and upwards, at the uncontrolled discretion of the vicar and churchwardens. The racecourse here, formed in 1883, comprises 196 acres, overlooking the valley of the Soar, and is distinguished by having a straight mile.
