Historical Description

At Dalby, a village, situated about two miles to the west of Nether Broughton, was a preceptory of the Knights Hospitallers, thought to have been founded by Robert Bossu, Earl of Leicester, in the former part of the reign of Henry II. and valued, upon the dissolution, at the yearly revenues of 91l. 2s. 8d.

In this village, which is also called Dalby-on- the-Would, to distinguish its situation on the high open grounds, is a considerable spring of chalybeate water, which it is said will rust through a bar of iron of an inch in diameter in the course of a year.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

DALBY-ON-THE-WOLDS (otherwise Old Dalby) is a village and parish, pleasantly situated in a beautiful dale among the Wold Hills, on the borders of Nottinghamshire, with a station on the Nottingham and Kettering branch of the Midland railway, 7 miles west-north-west from Melton Mowbray and 111 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of East Goscote, Melton Mowbray petty sessional division, union and county court district. The church of St. John the Baptist, rebuilt in 1835, at a cost of £5,000, is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, north porch and an embattled tower containing a clock and 4 bells, dated 1584, 1631, 1608 and 1835: there are three monuments in the chancel to the Gainsborough family, two of which are dated 1548 and 1603; the date of the other is unknown: the Rev. George Sawyer M.A. a former incumbent, left by will £275 yearly as an additional endowment to the church, which he rebuilt: in 1894 the church was restored, the tenor bell recast and the bells rehung, and a new organ added, at a total cost of £1,400: there are 200 sittings. The registers are of parchment, in good condition and date from the year 1725. The living is a donatire, net yearly value £310, with residence and two acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Rev. W. G. Sawyer, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Frederick Murray Symonds M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford, who is also rector of Saxelby. The charities include a field of 4 acres, which produces about £4 10s. yearly: in 1828 the Hon. Mrs. Bowater left a sum of money, the interest of which, amounting to £2 8s. 4d. is given to the poor of this village. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. A preceptory of Knights Hospitallers was founded here by Robert Bossu, Earl of Leicester, in the reign of Henry II. in connection with their house at Hether, in this county: at the Dissolution its revenue was valued at £91 2s. 8d. yearly. In the parish is a chalybeate spring. At Six Hills, near the Fossway, are many barrows and high hills. Dalby Hall, the seat of Charles James Phillips esq. D.L., J.P. lord of the manor, is a building of stone with gardens and pleasure grounds. The principal landowners are C. J. Phillips esq. the trustees of John Coupland esq. of Goscote Hail, and G. E. Carter esq. The soil is clay; subsoil, gravel. The land is chiefly in pasture. Dalby has long been noted for its Stilton cheese, which is made to a considerable extent. The acreage is 3,181; rateable value, £5,187; the population in 1891 was 345.

National School (mixed), to hold 80 children; average attendance, 51.
