Historical Description

WHITWICK is a parish, township and market town, with a station on the Charnwood Forest railway (London and North Western) from Nuneaton to Loughborough, miles east-by-south from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, 13 north-west from Leicester and 120 from London, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of West Goscote, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, rural deanery of South Akeley, archdeaconry of Leicester and diocese of Peterborough. The original parish of Whitwick contained the townships of Whitwick, Swannington and Thringstone, out of which have been formed the civil parishes of Whitwick St. George (Swannington), Whitwick St. Andrew (Thringstone) and part of that of Coalville. The government of the parish is under the Coalville Urban District Council. The parish church of St. John the Baptist is a fine building of stone, in the Gothic style of the 13th century, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a noble western tower, containing 8 bells, 4 cast in the 17th century, and 4 new bells hung in 1891, when the old bells were re-hung, and the belfry put in thorough repair: the east window is stained, and in 1887 several stained windows were placed in the south aisle: under the chancel is a crypt, and in the north aisle is an ancient tomb with recumbent knightly effigy to a member of the Talbot family; the knight’s helmet bears the mutilated inscription,” Miserere, Mei Deus, Jesus Nazarenus, Bex Judaeorum”: there is a distich current in the parish, “Nought remains in Talbot’s name, but Talbot wood and Talbot lane”: the church was partially restored in 1848—9, at a cost of nearly £1,700, under the direction of J. P. St. Aubyn esq. architect, of London, and in 1875 the chancel was decorated and a stained east window inserted, and in 1898 a new organ was provided at a cost of £1,500: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1601 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £330, including 200 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and held since 1894 by the Rev. James Wilson Alexander Mackenzie M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. The Catholic chapel, erected in 1837, is dedicated to the Holy Cross: the presbytery is at present occupied by Sisters of Charity, a new residence close to the chapel having been built for the priest. There are also Baptist, Wesleyan, Reformed Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels. The cemetery, consecrated 24 June, 1874, contains about 4 acres of land and is divided into three parts, appropriated respectively to the Church of England, Catholics and Nonconformists; there are no mortuary chapels: it is entered by a lych gate, and has also a lodge for the caretaker: the cemetery is under the control of the Coalville Urban District Council. The original grant of the market dates from 1288. Charnwood Forest commences in this parish, and amid the forest hills, and about a mile from Whitwick railway station, is the modern Cistercian abbey of St. Bernard, founded in 1835 by the late Ambrose De Lisle esq. of Grace Dieu, and raised in 1848 to the dignity of a mitred Abbey, Father Bernard (John Palmer) being appointed the first Abbot, this being the first Catholic abbey built and continuously used as such in England since the Reformation; the buildings, designed by the elder Pugin, comprise a church, cloisters, chapter house, refectory and other domestic buildings, museum, library, infirmary, guest house and a house for the poor: there are also farm buildings and a cemetery, and in one part of the grounds a “Calvary,” formed on a huge and lofty mass of rock: the buildings are, for the most part, in the Lancet style; the church at present consists only of nave, with aisles: the abbey is open to the inspection of visitors, who are attended by a guest-master. Whitwick Castle, some traces of which remain on the Castle hill, belonged to the Earls of Leicester, and was once an important fortress. Almshouses were erected on Castle hill in 1846, by Joseph Almond Cropper esq. formerly of Loughborough. The trustees of the late Lord Donington (d. 1895), who are lords of the manor, Capt. Sir George Howland William Beaumont bart. the community of St. Bernard’s Abbey, William Whetstone esq. of Broom Leys, Everard March-Phillipps De Lisle esq. of Grace Dieu Warren, and B. H. Tayleur esq. are the chief landowners. Capt. Sir George Howland William Beaumont bart. is impropriator. The soil is mixed; subsoil, chiefly clay, sandstone and granite rock. The usual crops are grown. The area of the civil parish is 3,528 acres; rateable value, £10,886; the population in 1891 of the civil parish was 4,564 and of the ecclesiastical, 2,501.
