Historical Description
Crowle is a small market-town, situated in the Isle of Axholme. It has a good church and a charity-school.
CROWLE is a small market town, parish and township, pleasantly situated in the Isle of Axholme and partly in the West Riding of Yorkshire, near the Stainforth and Keadby canal, with a station on a branch from Doncaster to Grimsby of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, 6 ½ miles north from Epworth, 13 south from Goole, 17 north-east from Doncaster, 17 north from Gainsborough and 165 (171 by rail) from London, in the West Lindsey division of the county, west division of the wapen-take of Manley, petty sessional division of Epworth, union and county court district of Thorne, parts of Lindsey, rural deanery of Axholme, archdeaconry of Stow and diocese of Lincoln.
The town was governed by a Local Board from Aug. 11, 1865; until, under the provisions of the "Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), an Urban District Council has been established; the town is lighted with gas and paved. The church of St. Oswald is a building of stone, the older portions being Norman, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, north aisle, south, porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells and a clock: historic evidences prove the early existence here of a church dedicated to St. Oswald, the Christian King of Northumbria, slain 5th August, 642, although probably only a wooden structure: the shaft of a Runic cross of stone, carved with interlaced ornament, and some figures, including a man on horseback, was used by the Norman masons a lintel and is over the tower arch: in 1868 the Rev. J. T. Fowler MA., F.S.A, of Durham, discovered upon this stone the remains of an inscription: the south wall, of ashlar in Small cubes, remains, With the inner jamb of one of the narrow Norman windows: the south doorway is of three orders, much enriched, and some stones of another door with zigzag moulding were found in the walling on the north side: the chancel, rebuilt about 1850, is said to be upon the old foundation, and inclines towards the north: the porch of brick and stone was added in 1628: there is it carved oak almsbox dated 1683, and the communion plate includes a chalice dated 1663: the treble bell is tolled according to a long-established custom on week days, at 6 a.m. at noon and at 6 p.m.,.; the church was restored in 1884, at a cost of £1,500, under the direction of Mr. A. S. Ellis, architect, of Westminster: there are 400 sittings. The register, including Eastoft, dates from the year 1561. The living is A vicarage, gross yearly value, from 500 acres of glebe, £804, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1868 by the Rev. Fredk. William White B.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge, who is non-resident; the Rev. Nisbet Colquhoun Marris M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, has been curate in charge since 1892. The Catholic church, dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament and St. Norbert was erected in 1872, and is an edifice of brick in the Early English style, from the designs of Mr. A. M. Hadfield, architect, of Sheffield, and is attached to a monastery of Premonstratensians, or White Canons, following the rule of their founder, St. Norbtert, Archbishop of Magdeburgh 1120: there is also a school, and the buildings generally occupy a site of about two acrps; the Very Rev. Matthew Smith C.R.P. is superior. Here are Congregational, Wesleyan, Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels. The Cemetery, opened in 1863, covers about two acres of ground, and lias two mortuary chapels; it is under the control of a Bural Borad of 9 members. The Market Hall was erected in 1870 by a limited company, with a capital of £1,450, in £5 shares. There is also an Assembly Room. The market for stock is held every Monday fortnight, during the months of March, April and May: there are also two annual fairs for cattle, held on the last Monday in May, and on the 23rd of November; and a statute for the hiring of farm labourers and domestic servants is held on the end Saturday in November, A weekly market is held every Friday. The principal landowners are Earl Manvers who is lord of the manor the trustees of the late Thomas Harsley Carnochan esq, the trustees of the late Samuel Cornelius Brunyee esq. of Sand Hall, Thomas Cornelius Scholey esq. of Eastoft Grange, James Heminghrough esq. of Holly Lodge, and the Vicar. The soil is warp and silt; subsoil, peat and sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans and potatoes. The area is 5,875 acres; rateable value, £13,841; the population of the township in 1891 was 2,641.
