Historical Description

HACKTHORN is a parish near Ermine Street, 8 miles west from Wickenby station on the Hull and Lincoln branch of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, 7 north-by-east from Lincoln and 10 west-south-west from Market Basen, in the West Lindsey division of the county, parts of Lindsey, eastern division of Aslacoe wapentake, petty sessional division of Lincoln (Bail and Close), union and county court district of Lincoln, rural deanery of Aslacoe, archdeaconry of Stow and diocese of Lincoln. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone, in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, north aisle, north porch and an elegant embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing one bell: there are stained windows in the chancel and in the aisle: the interior is fitted with benches of carved oak, affording 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, with the rectory of Cold Hanworth annexed, average tithe rent-charge £82, joint gross yearly value £258, net £223, inducing 170 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of E. W. Cracroft esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. William Hathorn Mills MA. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Hackthorn Hall, the seat of Edward Weston Cracroft esq. J.P. is a large and handsome mansion of stone, standing in a well-wooded park of 100 acres, in which is a small lake. E. W. Cracroft esq. who is lord of the manor, and Mrs. Lee Mainwaring are the principal landowners. The soil is loam and clay; subsoil, limestone. The principal crops are wheat, barley, turnips and clover. The area is 2,672 acres; rateable value, £2,435; the population in 1891 was 280.

School, built in 1870 & enlarged in 1887, & will now hold 80 children; average attendance, 48.
