Historical Description
LEADENHAM (or Long Ledenham) is a parish and large village on the Cliff road from Lincoln to Grantham, which is here crossed by the road from Sleaford to Newark, with a station on the Grantham and Lincoln branch of the Great Northern railway, and is 12 miles north from Grantham, 10 east from Newark, 9 west-north-west from Sleaford, 13 south from Lincoln and 118 from London, in the North Kesteven division of the county, wapentake of Loveden, parts of Kesteven, Sleaford petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Loveden and archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln. The church of St. Swithin is a building of stone in the Late Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower with octagonal pinnacles and a beautiful crocketed spire, adorned with fine louvre lights: the tower contains six bells with chimes and an excellent dock, put up at a cost of £409 by Philip Beeve esq.: the stained east window was executed in Flanders, and placed here in 1827 by the Rev. Thomas Brown, a former rector: in 1880 the lower part of the window was filled with glass in memory of the Rev. Offley Smith MA. rector from 1843, and his mother: there are seven other stained windows: in 1830 the church was thoroughly repaired, and was reseated with open oak sittings in 1861, and has 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £700, with 10 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Col. John Beeve, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Vivian Eccles Skrine MA. of Corpus Christi college, Oxford. A Wesleyan chapel was erected in 1841. At the Inclosure, the church and poor lands were exchanged for an allotment of about 54 acres, which is partly let to labourers at £1 per acre: the whole income amounts to about £75 a year, which is applied to the maintenance of the church and poor. Twelve of the poorest men of Leadenham have annually divided amongst them at Christmas a sum of £20, arising from the rent of upwards of 10 acres of land, the bequest of Mr. John Key in 1784: the recipients of this charity also have £10 yearly charged on the manor of Leadenham by William Reeve esq. in 1820, and General Reeve's charity, amounting to £6 13s. 6d. yearly. The poor also have an interest in a few smaller bequests. Col. William Henry Reeve's charity of £15 yearly is distributed in coal, and Lt.-Col. Reeve’s benefaction, amounting to about £15 yearly, is distributed in coal at Easter between six poor men and six poor women. The feast is held on the Sunday after the 2nd July. A drinking fountain was erected in 1867, in memory of Lieut.-Gen. John Reeve (d. 1874) and Lady Susan (Sherard), his wife, by their children. Near the village is a barrow and a spring called “St. Anne’s Well.” The view from the adjacent cliff is very extensive, comprising in its range Lincoln Minster, Boston church, Grantham and Newark churches and Belvoir Castle. Leadenham House, a substantial mansion of stone, surrounded by extensive pleasure grounds, is the seat of Lieut.-Col. John Reeve D.L., J.P. the lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is a fine strong loam, heath and stiff clay; subsoil, stone and day. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and seeds. The area is 3,886 acres, including 258 in Bayard’s Leap parish; rateable value of Leadenham, £5,142; the population in 1891 was 606.
