Historical Description

NORTH ORMSBY (or Nun Ormsby) is a parish and village, 2 ½ miles south-west from Ludborough station on the East Lincolnshire branch of the Great Northern railway, and 5 ½ north-west from Louth, in the East Lindsey division of the county, parts of Lindsey, wapentake of Ludborough, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Louth, rural deanery of Louth Eske and Ludborough No. 1, archdeaconry of Stow and diocese of Lincoln. The church of St. Helen is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave and a western turret containing one bell, and was rebuilt in 1848 by the late Miss Ansell, from designs by the late Mr. S. S. Teulon, architect: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1741. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £142, gross yearly value £193, net £158, including 25 acres of glebe, in the gift of Captain Wing, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Henry Nevitt, of St. Aidan’s, who resides at Utterby. In 1863, six graves, cut out of the natural chalk, and inclosed by pieces of sandstone, were found in the churchyard, and are supposed to have been of Saxon origin. A priory of Gilbertine nuns, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, was founded here in the reign of Stephen, by William, Earl of Albemarle, and Gilbert, son of Robert de Ormsby; at the Dissolution it was valued at £80 11s. 10d. and was granted by Henry VIII. to Sir Robert Heneage: the site of the buildings, which appear to have been considerable, can stall be traced. Major Robert Saunders, of Alton Pancras, Dorset, who is lord of the manor, and Captain and Miss Wing, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,707 acres; rateable value, £1,734; the population in 1891 was 183.
