Historical Description
SWINSTEAD is a parish and pleasant village, 2 miles south-east from Corby station on the main line of the Great Northern railway, 7 west-north-west from Bourne and about 11 ½ north from Stamford, in the South Kesteven division of the county, parts of Kesteven, wapentake of Beltisloe, Bourne petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Beltisloe and archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, and containing 4 bells: there is a fine monument to Brownlow, fifth and last Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven, who died 8th Feb. 1809; and another monument erected according to directions contained in the will of Elizabeth Julia Georgiana, wife of John (Fitz Gibbon), 2nd Earl of Clare, in memory of her mother, Baroness Willoughby de Eresby: the church was restored, with the exception of the chancel, in 1854, repewed and stained windows introduced, chiefly at the cost of the late Lord Willoughby de Eresby (d. 1870); and the chancel was restored in 1859: there are sittings for 250 persons. The register dates from the year 1733. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £150, arising from 120 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Ancaster P.C. and held since 1896 by the Rev. Edmund Healy Outram B.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. There is a small Wesleyan chapel. There are about 15 acres of poor’s land; the rent is expended as directed yearly, Barnes’ charity of £2 10s. yearly is for boots, A space of about 3 acres of land belonging to the living, which had by some means become attached to the poor’s land, was recovered by the late vicar, and the rent applied to the repairs of the church. In the village is an ancient stone cross and a well of pure and refreshing water. Swinstead hall occupies the site of the now demolished farmhouse, called the “Abbey farm, ’ which had a doorway of the Early English: period. The Earl of Ancaster P.C. is lord of the manor, lay impropriator and principal landowner. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are cereals. The area is 1,715 acres; rateable value, £1,386; the population in 1891 was 343.
