Historical Description
Walcot is a small village about a mile to the north-west of Folkingham, is a chalybeate spring, formerly famous for its medicinal virtues.
WALCOT is a parish and pleasant village, 4 ½ miles west-by-north from Billingboro’ station on the Bourne and Sleaford branch of the Great Northern railway, 1 ½ north-west from Folkingham, 11 east from Grantham and 9 south from Sleaford, in the North Kesteven division of the county, parts of Kesteven, Aveland wapentake, Sleaford petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Aveland No. 1, and archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln. The church of St. Nicholas is a building of stone chiefly of the Decorated period, the nave being Early English, and consists of a chancel with chapel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and a tower with fine crocketed spire, containing 4 bells: the windows, particularly the east window, which retains some ancient glass, are fine: the clerestory is Perpendicular: in the south asle is an extremely beautiful canopied niche, with buttresses and pinnacles: the chancel has a piscina in a window sill and a priest’s door crocketed with oak leaves: a curious oak chest remains in the church, and in the chantry chapel a piscina with double hagioscope above it: the carved stalls are good examples of their date: in 1889 all the foundations were renewed at a cost of £200; there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1574. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value from 123 acres of glebe £166; net £150, in the gift of the Earl of Ancaster, and held since 1879 by the Rev. William Christopher Houghton B.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, who is also curate of Newton-with-Haceby, and resides at Haceby. The rent of poor’s land amounts to about £8, which is distributed in coals at Christmas. There are springs of very pure water in this parish, one of which is strongly chalybeate. The Earl of Ancaster P.C. who is lord of the manor and impropriator of the great tithes, and the trustees of Miss Ellis, of Waltham Place, Maidenhead, Berks, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay, loam and gravel; subsoil, chiefly clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,747 acres; rateable value, £1,843; the population in 1891 was 147.
