Historical Description

WROOT is a parish and village, on the borders of the West Riding of Yorkshire, 4 miles east from Finningley station on the Spalding and Doncaster section of the Great Northern and Great Eastern joint railway, 5 west from Epworth, 12 north-west from Gainsborough, 8 north-north-east from Bawtry and 11 east from Doncaster, in the West Lindsey division of the county, parts of Lindsey, west division of Manley wapentake, Epworth petty sessional division, Thome union and county court district, rural deanery of Axholme, archdeaconry of Stow and diocese of Lincoln. The church of St. Pancras, rebuilt in 1879 on the site of the ancient edifice, is a structure of brick, into which portions of the former 14th century church have been incorporated, and consists of chancel, with organ chamber and vestry, nave, south porch and a small tower on the south side containing one bell: there are inscribed brasses to Samuel Smyth, son of Francis Smyth, rector of Panton, d. 1765; Mary, wife of the Rev. John Whitelambe, rector; and Henry Clifford MA. rector, d. 1714; and there is a stone coffin of the 12th century: the credence table was the gift of Mrs. Wolseley Lewis, of Cheltenham, in 1882: the church plate is of hammered silver, the chalice dating from 1510: there are sittings for 100 persons. The register dates from 1573. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge £430; average, £316, net yearly value £305, including 100 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Charles James Bowen B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, J.P. The Rev. Samuel Wesley, rector of Epworth, also held this rectory, and his distinguished son the Rev. John Wesley MA. was curate here for two, years, from 1728. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in, 1870, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1867. The principal landowners are George Bletcher esq. the trustees of the late Thomas Hewitt esq. Wm. Cartwright esq. J. Stephenson esq. The Hatfield Chase Corporation, the trustees of the late Barnard Platt Bromhead-Cotton Fox esq. and C. J. Vint esq. The soil is sand and moor; subsoil, gravel with peat. The chief crops are potatoes, celery and wheat. The area is 3,235 acres; rateable value, £2,616; the population in 1891 was 333.

National School (mixed), founded & endowed in 1706, by Henry Travis; the present school was built in 1879, on a portion of the glebe, & a master’s residence added in 1891; the school holds about 100 children; average attendance, 50; the endowment derived from land amounts to £80 a year.
