Historical Description
ACTON is a metropolitan suburban parish, situated on a slight eminence, with stations on the Great Western, North London and District railways, 5 miles west from the Marbla Arch, on the Oxford road, and is in the Ealing division of the county, Kensington division of Ossulstone hundred, Brentford union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Ealing, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London: the parish is in the West London police court district and Western Metropolitan postal district. Acton was governed by a Local Board of 15 members, formed in 1886, but under the provisions of the ‘‘Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), it is now controlled by an Urban District Council, and is divided into three wards; the late Local Board carried out a system of drainage at a cost of over £85,000; it is lighted with gas from works at Brentford, the property of the Brentford Gas Company. The church of St. Mary, rebuilt, with the exception of the, tower, in 1865, is a building of red brick with stone, dressings, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, north porch and an embattled tower at the south-west, angle, re-erected in 1877 by Mr. F. Ouvry and members of his family, in memory of their sister, Miss Francisca Ingram Ouvry, and containing a clock and 8 bells, recast at the same date: the carved heads in the arch of the west doorway of the tower are copies from old pictures of Richard Baxter and Sir Matthew Hale kt. chief justice of the King's Bench, both for some time inhabitants of Acton: there are many handsome stained windows, the gifts of parishioners: all the monuments from the former church have been replaced; these include a memorial to Anne, wife first, of Sir Thomas Southwell kt. and afterwards of Henry Sibthorpe esq. who died in 1636, and others to Catherine (Hambler) relict of Richard Fust, and second wife of Edward, first Viscount Conway, principal Secretary of State to James I. and Charles 1.; she died in 1639; Mrs. Elizabeth Barry, the actress, d. 7 Nov. 1713; Robert Adair esq. inspector general of hospitals, d. 1790, and Lady Caroline (Keppel), his wife: the fine organ was rebuilt and enlarged in 1894: the communion plate, given by Alice Lady Dudley in 1639, includes a finely wrought flagon: several brasses formerly in the church are now lost: an ornamental iron gate and railings were erected at the west end of the church in 1897 in commemoration of H. M. Diamond Jubilee: there are 950 sittings: in the churchyard is buried William Aldridge, who died in 1698, aged 114. The register of baptisms dates from 1539; marriages and burials, 1566: they contain references to Philip Skippon, the Parliamentary general, and the Rous family, as well as to soldiers killed in action near here. The living is a rectory, tithes commuted at £1,037, average £642, net yearly value £435, with residence, built about 1725, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1896 by the Rev. George Spencer De Sausmarez, of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Among the other rectors of this parish was Daniel Featley, 1627, who was turned out of his rectory house by the Parliamentary soldiers, and in 1642 deprived of this living and that of Lambeth; he was succeeded by Philip Nye, the Puritan, mentioned in Butler’s “Hudibras,” a member of the assembly of divines, and in 1653 one of the triers of public preachers; he was ejected at the Restoration, when Charles II. appointed Dr. Bruno Ryves, his chaplain, dean of Chichester and author of “Mercurius Rusticus,” a narrative of Royalists’ sufferings; he was afterwards dean of Windsor and of Wolverhampton, and dying at Windsor, 13 July, 1677, was buried in St. George’s Chapel; Dr. Edward Parry, late archdeacon of Canterbury and Bishop of Dover was rector here 1859—69. The Wesleyan chapel, enlarged in 1890, has sittings for about 300. The Central Hall, Priory Board schools, is a large room, about 80 feet square, used for public assemblies, and will hold 600 persons. The Passmore Edwards Acton Jubilee Cottage Hospital, Gunnersbury lane, built in 1897, and opened May 4, 1898, was erected at the cost of Passmore Edwards esq. on a site presented by Lord Rothschild and Leopold De Rothschild esq.; it is a structure of red and yellow bricks, in the Georgian style, and consists mainly of a ground floor story, with a male and female ward, each containing four beds and a cot; the central entrance leads to a hall, on one side of which is a convalescent room, on the other side matron’s, operating and nurses’ day rooms, hospital dispensary and administration offices; above are seven rooms available for bedrooms, or as special rooms for patients; in the rear are kitchen, scullery and laundry, with separate entrance and another separate entrance for out-door patients. The Goldsmiths’ Almshouses, in Churchfield road east, are well endowed, and contain ten married couples and ten widows. James Cunningham, who served in all Queen Anne’s wars, and died in 1774 at the age of 83. A procession of 300 coaches from the city of London met Cromwell at Acton on his return from the battle of Worcester, Sept. 3, 1651, and presented him with a congratulatory address; at Aoton Green, on the southern side of the parish, an encounter took place, 15 Nov. 1642, between the Parliamentary forces under the Earl of Essex and the army of King Charles I. in which the latter took 500 prisoners. At the east end of High street, Acton, is Berrymede Priory, once the site of a religious house containing upwards of forty nuns, and some time the residence of William Savile, second Marquess of Halifax, who died here 31st August, 1700: it was afterwards held by Evelyn, first Duke of Kingston, and during his tenancy was frequently visited by George II. and at a later period by Sir G. E. L. Bulwer Lytton bart. the distinguished novelist and statesman, and subsequently created (1866) Baron Lytton of Knebworth: the mansion is a picturesque building in a modern style of Gothic, and since about 1886 has served as a constitutional club for the Ealing division of Middlesex; the grounds, about 3 acres, have been sold for building purposes. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The waste lands of the parish, now under the control of the Council, are fenced in and planted with trees for the recreation of the inhabitants. In 1887, the local Board purchased from the Goldsmiths’ Company, at a cost of £17,000, 21 acres of land, which have been laid out at a cost of £2,000.
