Historical Description
EAST BEDFONT is a village and parish on the Great Western road, 1 mile north-west from Feltham station on the Windsor branch of the London and South Western railway, 15 miles from London, 3 north-east from Staines and 2 ½ south-west from Hounslow, in the Uxbridge division of the county, Spelthorne hundred and petty sessional division, Staines union, Chertsey county court district, and in the rural deanery of Hampton, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The Longford stream flows through the parish. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone and flint, chiefly of the Norman period, and consists of chancel, nave, modern north transept, south porch and a wooden tower on the south side, with a dwarf spire and containing 6 fine-toned bells: in the chancel are two mural paintings, representing “The Crucifixion” and “The Last Judgment,” which are considered to be of the late 13th or early 14th century; here also is a small brass, with the effigy of a man in the costume of the Jacobean period: the south doorway, the chancel arch and one window in the chancel are Norman: in the nave is a double recess: there is a memorial window in the south wall to the Rev. Henry Engleheart M.A. d. 1885: in the churchyard, on the south side of the church, are two fine yew trees, trained and clipped to resemble two peacocks, and celebrated by Hood in his poem called the “Peacocks of Bedfont:” one bears the date 1704 and the other the initials of the then vicar and churchwardens, I. H., I. G., R. T.; and their united branches form an arch in front of the porch: the church was thoroughly restored in 1866, and has now 326 sittings. The register dates from the year 1650. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £262, with 16 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1871 by the Rev. Nicholas Gee Pilkington M.A. of University College, Durham: the Ecclesiastical Commissioners are the appropriators of the great tithes, amounting to £619. A hall, seating about 300 persons, was erected in 1884 by the Bedfont Public Hall Company Limited. On the Sion House stream, at the eastern extremity of the parish, are powder mills. Spelthorne St. Mary, situated here, was opened in Jan. 1878, for the treatment of gentlewomen and middle-class women who have fallen into the habit of intemperance. Bedfont is supposed to have been a Roman station; coins, urns and human remains have been found near it in considerable quantities. The Duke of Northumberland K.G. is lord of the manor, and Lady Pollock, of 59 Montagu square, London W. Christ’s Hospital, London, the Misses Sherborn, Mrs. Reed and Henry Barnfield are chief landowners. The soil is gravel; subsoil, gravel. The crops are chiefly garden produce. The area is 1,909 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £10,283; the population in 1891 (including Hatton) was 1,815.
