Historical Description

CRANFORD, deriving its name from its situation on the Crane stream, is a village and parish, bounded on the south by the Bath road and on the north by the Grand Junction canal, and 2 miles south-west from Southall station on the main line of the Great Western railway and west from the station at Hounslow Barracks, of the Metropolitan District railway, and 13 from London: the parish is in the Uxbridge division of the county, Elthorne hundred, Uxbridge petty sessional division and county court district, Staines union, and in the rural deanery of Hampton, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The church of St. Dunstan is a small but ancient building of stone, partly in the Norman style, and consisting of chancel, nave and a western tower containing 3 bells: the nave having been burnt down in 1710 was rebuilt in brick in 1716, and in 1895 a vestry was added on the north side of the tower: in the chancel is a mural monument of marble and alabaster to the celebrated Thomas Fuller D.D. fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, who became rector here in 1658, and is the well-known author of “The Church History of Britain,” “The Worthies of England,” and many other learned works; he died in Covent Garden, 15 Aug. 1661: there is also a very fine monument with kneeling effigies of himself, his first and second wives, four daughters and an infant, to Sir Roger Aston kt. groom of the bedchamber to James I. who died in 1603: beneath the chancel are buried several members of the Berkeley family, Earls of Berkeley, to whom there are mural monuments, including one to Francis Henry Fitzhardinge Berkeley esq. M.P. for Bristol, 1837—70, d. 10 Mar. 1870; here also was buried Sir Charles Scarborough kt. M.D. ob. 1696: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £247, with residence and 14 acres of glebe land, in the gift of Lord Fitzhardinge, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Joseph Frederic Vincent Lee B.A. Trinity College, Dublin. Dr. John Wilkins, Bishop of Chester 1668—73, succeeded Dr. Fuller in this rectory, and was the founder of the Scientific Association, which at the Restoration became the Royal Society: he died 19th November, 1672. The school church of the Holy Angels is used as a chapel of ease to the parish church, divine service being held on Sunday evenings in the winter at 6.30, and at eight o’clock on Sunday mornings throughout the year; a children’s service also is held on alternate Sunday afternoons. There is a Baptist chapel here, erected in 1866. Cranford House is the residence of Lord Fitzhardinge, who is lord of the manors of Cranford St. John (formerly belonging to the Knights Hospitallers) and Cranford le Mote: the park extends over 70 acres, and is traversed by the river Crane, which is widened so as to form a lake, and abounds in fish and wild fowl. The ancient manor house of Cranford le Mote was taken down about 1780. Lord Fitzhardinge is the chief landowner. The Hon. Thomas Moreton Fitzhardinge Berkeley, de jure 6th Earl of Berkeley, though he never assumed the title, lived for many years at Cranford Cottage, on the outskirts of the park; and died 27 August, 1882. The soil is brick earth; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, hay and garden produce. The area is 726 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £3,543; the population in 1891 was 507.

National School (mixed & infants), erected in 1883 & enlarged in 1887, at a cost of £1,400, raised by subscriptions, & a class room added in 1888, for 166 children; average attendance, 100 boys & girls & 50 infants.
