Historical Description

EDGWARE is a small town on the road from London to St. Albans, with a terminal station of the branch of the Great Northern railway, from Finsbury Park; 1 ½ miles west from Mill Hill station on the Midland railway, 6 south-east from Watford, and 8 miles from Oxford street, in the Harrow division of the counity, hundred and petty sessional division of Gore, Hendon union, Watford county court district, and in the rural deanery of Harrow, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. It stands in the parishes of Edgware and Little Stanmore and Hendon, the high road through the town dividing the parishes. The town is lighted with gas from works at Stanmore marsh, the property of the Stanmore Gas Company Limited, and water is supplied by the Colne Valley Water Company. The church of St. Margaret, originally forming, is it believed, part of a monastery dedicated to St. John of Jerusalem, is an edifice of brick, flint and stone, in a debased Perpendicular style, and was rebuilt by subscription, with the exception of the tower, in 1845, at a cost of £1,500, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts and an embattled western tower of flint and stone, containing a clock and 6 bells: the east window and those in the transepts are stained: there is a monument with inscription in Latin, to Ralph Nicoll, ob. 1658; and a brass, with the effigy of an infant, to Anthoni Childe, ob. 1599: the church affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1717. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, with 9 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Hubert Hunter Phelps M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The Rev. Francis Coventry M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge, author of a satirical romance called “Pompey the Little,” was curate here shortly before his death, in 1759; Thomas Martyn F.R.S. professor of botany at Cambridge, who died 3 June, 1825, at Perton Hall, Beds, was rector here. Here is a Congregational chapel. In 1680 Samuel Atkinson, a native of this place, built and endowed almshouses for four poor women, each of whom receives 3s. per week, is under the will of the founder and 2s. from the interest of £1,000, bequeathed by Miss Harriet Hurst, who died in 1875. Almshouses for eight decayed tradespeople were endowed in the year 1828 by the late Charles Day esq. with the sum of £100 yearly, derived from money invested in Consols; each inmate receives 4s. 6d. per week and in addition 2s. per week, interest on £1,250 bequeathed by Miss Harriet Hurst. Edgware is mentioned as having a market on Thursday in the time of Henry II. the site of which was conveyed by Sir Lancelot Lake kt. of Canons, in 1668, to certain trustees upon trust for a public school. Near the church was a place for refreshment for monks on their journeys from Westminster to St. Albans: and amongst the records of the Court of Augmentation at the Public Record Office, London, is preserved a certificate of the goods and plate of the church and monastery of Edgware at the time of the dissolution of religious houses. In earlier times Edgware is said to have been a place dependent on the ancient Roman Verulamium, mentioned by Tacitus, and identical with the Saxon Watlingceaster, from which the road which passes through it is said to have derived its name of Watling Street; in the street of Edgware formerly stood the blacksmith’s shop where Handel one afternoon in 1721 took refuge from the rain and is traditionally said to have conceived the composition of his “Harmonious Blacksmith.” William Powell, the blacksmith thus immortalized, was also parish clerk of Whitchurch and died February 27th, 1780: his anvil and hammer were sold by auction by Messrs. Puttick and Simpson, in June, 1879. Races were held here in 1869 and 1873, but have not been continued. The Warden and Fellows of All Souls’ College, Oxford, are lords of the manor. The parish of Edgware contains 2,089 acres; rateable value, £13,070; the population in 1891 was 864.

At Brockley Hill, near the borders of Herts, was the Roman station Sulloniacae, at or near the 10th mile stone.

Parish Clerk, James Nutkins.
