Historical Description

FELTHAM (anciently Feldham) is a parish, with a station three-quarters of a mile north-east from the old village on the Windsor branch of the London and South Western railway, 3 ½ miles south-west from Hounslow, 4 east (by rail) from Staines and 14 ¾ from London, in the Uxbridge division of the county, Spelthorne hundred and petty sessional division, Staines union, Chertsey county court district, and in the rural deanery of Hampton, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The church of St. Dunstan, a plain edifice of brick, on the road to Sunbury, was erected in 1802, and consists of nave, aisles added in 1856, and an embattled western tower with spire containing a clock and 3 bells: in the interior are several tablets: there are 370 sittings. In the churchyard is a memorial to William Wynne Ryland, engraver, executed for forgery in August, 1783. The register dates from the year 1635. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £289, with residence, in the gift of E. J. Wythes esq. of Copped Hall, Essex, and held by the Rev. John Francis Jemmett B.C.L., M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The church of St. Catherine, erected in 1880 at the upper end of the village, close to the railway station, as a chapel of ease to the parish church, is an edifice of Kentish ragstone and brick, with Bath stone dressings, in the Early Decorated style, from designs by Messrs. Carpenter and Ingelow, and consists of nave, north aisle, north porch (added in 1890), and tower with spire built in 1898: there are sittings for 360 persons. The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1870, will seat 150; the Congregational chapel, founded in 1806 and rebuilt in 1865, seats 250 persons. A cemetery of 1 ½ acres was formed in 1885, at a cost of about £1,400, but has no mortuary chapels; it is now under the control of the Parish Council. The Young Men’s Friendly Society occupies premises in the High street, formerly the infants’ schools, but converted to its present purpose in 1885. Miss Frances Maria Kelly, actress, died here in December, 1882, aged 90. Thomas and Edward Barnett and Peregrine Birch esqrs. and others are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Robert, Alfred William and Harry Smith, and Messrs. Paine and Brettell. The soil is gravelly; subsoil, gravel. A considerable portion of the parish is cultivated by nurserymen and market gardeners. The area is 1,777 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £16,212; the population in 1891 was 3,661, inclusive of 866 inmates of industrial school.

Schools

A School Board of 5 members was formed July 25, 1874; Oswald Jacob, The Green, clerk to the board.

Board, erected in 1876, enlarged in 1895, for 270 boys, 270 girls & 200 infants; average attendance, 200 boys, 180 girls & 195 infants: a new infants’ school was built in 1885.

London County Council Industrial School for Boys, established here in 1859, consists of the large principal building, a chapel, infirmary, workshops, farm, residences for officers, gas factory, sewage works & other detached buildings; about 70 acres of land are cultivated by the inmates, now (1898) 630 in number; this institution is supported by county rates & a capitation grant from the Lords of the Treasury, & is administered by a committee of the London County Council; Erdric Bayley esq. chairman; Thomas Breame Beuttler, superintendent; Rev. Henry Cornelius Laycock B.A. chaplain; Percival Kingsford, medical officer; Edward Thomas Duell, clerk of school; David Nicholson, clerk to the committee; John H. Keeble, clerk of building works.
