Historical Description

Finchley Common contains one thousand and ten acres of land, which might be very advantageously brought into cultivation.

Finchley Church is a stone building, consisting of a nave, chancel, and north aisle; the architecture is of that sort of Gothic which prevailed towards the close of the fifteenth century. At the west end is a low embattled tower. The roof of the nave and chancel is of wood, and ornamented with carved flowers.

In the chancel, within the communion rails, are the tombs of Simon Scudemore, Gent. with figures of brass of himself and his wife (dated 1609) and several others not particularly interesting.

An Almshouse for six poor persons has been erected by the feoffees of certain charities, bequeathed by Robert Warren, Esq. in 1485, and Thomas Sarmcy in 1509.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

FINCHLEY is a parish 5 miles in length, including part of Whetstone, and lies to the north of London, near the river Brent and the great North road, being 7 miles from the General Post Office, in the Northern Metropolitan postal district, Hornsey division of the county, Ossulstone hundred, Highgate petty sessional division, Barnet union and county court district, within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court and Metropolitan Police, and in the rural deanery of Highgate, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The parish is divided into Finchley proper or Church End, East and North Finchley, each with separate railway stations (the last now known as Woodside Park) on the High Barnet branch of the Great Northern railway, each about a mile distant from the other. It was formerly governed by a Local Board, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), is now controlled by an Urban District Council of 12 members. The parish is lighted with gas by the North Middlesex Gas Co., the Barnet Gas and Water Co. and the Colney Hatch Gas Co. whose works are at Mill Hill, Barnet and Colney Hatch, and is also supplied with water from Barnet by the Barnet Gas and Water Co. The parish church of St. Mary, standing on an eminence about a mile from the great North road, is an edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays with clerestory, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells, the smallest dated 1770: in 1872—3 the church was restored, the chancel extended 18 feet and a north aisle built, at a total cost of about £4,000: there are several brasses with effigies, of which the oldest is to Richard Pratt, ob. 1487, and Johanna his wife; there are others to Simon Skudemore, gent. ob. 1609, and Jeane (Edwards) his wife, with one daughter; and on the same slab to Nicholas Luke, gent, and his wife Elizabeth (Skudemore), bur. at Eversley, Hants, with six children; Thomas White, citizen and grocer of London, ob. 1610, his three wives, with thirteen children; and to William Godolphin, ob. 1575; there is an inscription to William Blakewell and his son Richard, c. 1500; and an extract on brass from the will of Thomas Sanny, of Finchley, ob. 1509: in the west wall are some traces of Norman stonework, suggesting the existence of an earlier fabric, though nothing is known of such a building, nor do the records of the rectory extend beyond the 14th century: the stained east window was inserted in 1880, to the memory of John Harris Heal, of Grass Farm, by his widow: in the churchyard is buried the political reformer, Major John Cartwright, d. 23 Sept. 1824, and Anne Catherine his wife, d. 21 Dec. 1834; and also Thomas Payne, the bookseller, d. Feb. 1799: the church affords 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, yearly value £700, including 109 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1892 by the Rev. William Edmund Batty M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. Richard Bancroft D.D. Archbishop of Canterbury, 1604—10, was formerly rector here.

St. Paul’s is an ecclesiastical district, formed in 1885, from the parish of St. Mary and Christ Church district: the church, in Long lane, Church Finchley, is a building of stone, in the Early English style, erected in 1885—6, from designs by John Ladds esq. architect, of London, at a cost of £8,000, defrayed by public subscriptions, and consists of chancel, with vestries and organ chamber, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, north porch and a turret on the north side containing one bell: there are 602 sittings. The register dates from the year 1886. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £350, with residence, in the gift of the Simeon trustees, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Samuel Bardsley Mayall. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1891 was 1,547.

East Finchley (Holy Trinity), is an ecclesiastical parish, formed Dec. 29, 1846: the church, at East End, is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, north porch and a turret at the west end containing 2 bells: the brass lectern and several stained windows were given by J. H. Lermitte esq. J.P. of Knightons, who also in 1865 built the north aisle to the memory of his children, and erected a marble pulpit to the memory of his wife: there are 740 sittings. The register dates from the year 1846. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £430, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Henry Nicholas Collier M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, and chaplain of the Marylebone cemetery. The area of the ecclesiastical parish is 1,260 acres; the population in 1891 was 6,229.

The church of All Saints (a chapel of ease to Holy Trinity) occupies a site in Durham road, Coldfall Wood, presented by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and was consecrated in June, 1892; it is a building of stone, in the Early Perpendicular style, from designs by Messrs. Cutts, architects, of London, and consists of nave and aisles with narthex porch: there are 500 sittings.

North Finchley (Christ Church) is an ecclesiastical parish, formed May 31, 1872, out of St. Mary’s, St. John’s, Whetstone and Holy Trinity: the church, begun in 1870, and now complete with the exception of the tower, is an edifice of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles and a western porch: the pulpit is inlaid with small pieces of jasper from St. Sophia’s, Constantinople: the church affords 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1872. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £400, with residence, in the gift of four trustees, and held since 1898 by the Rev. James Thomason Lang M.A. and late fellow of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1891 was 4,250.

St. Barnabas’ chapel of ease, attached to Christ Church, Holden road, is a small iron building, erected in 1885, and has 250 sittings: the Rev. Philip Dowe B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, has been curate in charge since 1888.

The Congregational church, East Finchley, built after the destruction by fire of the old chapel in 1875, is a building of Kentish rag, with Bath stone dressings, in the Early Decorated style, from designs by Messrs. Mus. Doc. the eminent musical composer, who died April 30th, 1856. Woodside Hall and Assembly Rooms, adjoining Woodside Park station, erected in 1885, at the sole cost of Henry Holden esq. proprietor of the Woodside Park Estate, form a structure of brick with stone dressings, in the Elizabethan style, from designs by Mr. Samuel Knight, architect, of London, and include a hall 70 by 30 feet, available for public meetings, concerts and dramatic performances, with a suite of retiring rooms; the premises are partially tenanted by the Woodside club, now (1898) consisting of about 108 members, managed by a committee of local gentlemen; the club premises comprise reading room, spacious billiard room with two, tables, committee rooms and steward’s residence: the Woodside Park Musical Society hold their rehearsals and concerts here: adjoining the hall are asphalte and grass tennis courts, also provided by H. Of Finchley Common very little is now left, but a great oak at Brown’s Wells, a little way north of the St. Paneras cemetery, is said to be the tree behind which Dick Turpin used to take his stand: Jack Sheppard was captured here in 1724: and here, at Church End, General Monk drew up his army in February, 1660, when on his famous march from the north: and a camp was also formed on the Common in 1745, on the invasion of England by Charles Edward, the Young Pretender, and the disorderly march of the Guards thither furnished Hogarth with the subject of a well-known picture. Knightons, East Finchley, is the residence of James Henry Lermitte esq. J.P. The manor has belonged from time immemorial to the see of London; the Manor House, a tall rectangular structure of brick, still has a moat and retains internally some of its ancient features, and it is now occupied by William Pearce Jones esq.
