Historical Description

Friarn Barnet, about one mile on the left of our road, is so called from its having been monastic property.

The church is of very small dimensions, and of Norman architecture, except the chancel window, which is Gothic. The arch of the door-case is circular, and has a zig-zag moulding, inclosing some ornaments of quatrefoils. At the west end is a small wooden turret. There are no monuments or inscriptions particularly interesting.

The manor-house, which is situated near the church, is a very ancient structure. It has undergone many alterations, but great part of the old building still remains, particularly some wooden cloisters, which has occasioned a tradition that this was a cell to a priory.

An Almshouse for twelve poor persons was founded in this parish by Lawrence Campe, citizen and draper of London, in 1612.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

FRIERN BARNET is a parish, on the east side of Finchley common, 3 ½ miles south from Barnet and 6 ½ from London by Great Northern railway and 8 by road via Highgate and Finchley, and equidistant from Woodside Park, Oakleigh Park, New Southgate and Friern Barnet stations, in the Northern metropolitan postal district, Enfield division of the county, Ossulston hundred, Highgate petty sessional division, Barnet union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Enfield, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The parish, formerly governed by a Local Board, formed December 5, 1883, is now under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), controlled by an Urban District Council of nine members: by an Order of the Middlesex County Council, confirmed by Local Government Board Order No. 27,338, dated 29th July, 1891, its area was extended so as to include a detached part of the Urban District of Hornsey, being a formerly detached part of Hornsey civil parish now amalgamated with Friern Barnet civil parish, so far as concerns the Urban District Council: sewage works were erected by the late Local Board on freehold land in 1886, and cover a space of 5 acres, with an additional 15 acres to allow for extensions and cultivation: the pumping station is at Ely Place: water is supplied by the Barnet Water Company and gas by the Colney Hatch Gas Company. The parish church of St. James, extensively restored and enlarged in 1853, is a building of flint with stone dressings, in the Early English and Decorated styles, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, south aisle, south porch and a western tower with spire containing one bell: the south doorway is Norman and ornamented with chevron work: the stained east window is a memorial to George Herne, son of Ebenezer and Joanna Elizabeth Homan, who died at Bloemfontein, South Africa, 8 Dec. 1878; on the east wall of the chancel aisle is a mural monument to members of the Cleve family, dated 1725, and on the exterior wall is a tablet inscribed to Sarah Rose, with the date 7 Feb. 1638: there are 300 sittings: in the churchyard lie Sir William Oedes kt. Usher of the Black Rod to Queen Anne and George I. and Thomas Cavendish, of Cavendish Overhall, Suff. (d. 1523), Clerk of the Pipe in the Exchequer and father of George Cavendish (d. 1562), who wrote a life of Cardinal Wolsey, to whom he was gentleman usher: there are also memorials to several former rectors, including Edmund Duncan, who died in 1673: the churchyard has been closed by order of the Home Secretary, and an additional piece of land has been given by the Miles family in lieu thereof. The registers date from the year 1674. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, with 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Frederick Hall M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. The chancel of a new church, to be called St. John’s, was erected here in 1892 at a cost of about £6,500, on a site given by the late G. Knights Smith esq. in the Early English style, from designs of the late J. L. Pearson esq. B.A., F.S.A, and was dedicated by the Bishop of London. The iron church of St. Peter, in Sydney road, was erected in 1884, and affords sittings for 250 persons. The Congregational church in Holly Park, built in 1883, will seat 350 persons. The Almshouses, founded in 1612 by Laurence Campe, for 12 aged parishioners, and repaired and altered in 1843, were thoroughly restored in 1897, in commemoration of the Queen’s Jubilee: the buildings are of stone, in the late Perpendicular or Tudor style, and bear in front the arms of the founder, those of the City of London and of the Drapers’ Company. John Walker, author of a “Critical Pronouncing Dictionary,” was born here 1 Mar. 1732, and dying 1 Aug. 1807, was buried in the churchyard of Old St. Pancras, London, where there is a memorial stone to him, erected by the Baroness Burdett-Coutts. Friern Barnet anciently belonged to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. The old manor house, originally a manse belonging to the Fria.rs of St. John, was the first “hospitium” for the entertainment of travellers upon the old North Road; in the time of Elizabeth it was occupied by Lord Chief Justice Sir John Popham, who was frequently visited there by the Queen: the modern hall was built in 1660. The Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Earl Temple, Mrs. Miles, Frederic Crisp esq. D.L., J.P. of the White House, and Ebenezer Homan esq. J.P. of Friern Watch. The area of the parish is 1,304 acres; the soil is of a gravelly nature; rateable value, £52,171. The population of parish and urban district in 1881 was 6,424, and in 1891 was 9,173, which includes the officers and inmates of the asylum, who numbered 2,458. The population attached to the parish church in 1891 was 6,227.
