Historical Description

Stanmore - Dr. Stukely supposes that the ancient city of Sulloniaca or Suelloniaca, mentioned by Antoninus in his Itinerary, was in this parish, not far from Brockley Hill. Camden and Norden agree that it was on or near that hill. Great quantities of Roman antiquities, as coins, urns, gold rings, &c. have formerly been found in this neighbourhood, which perhaps gave vise to the proverb;

' No heart can think, or tongue can tell What lies between Brockley Hill and Pennywell. '

An obelisk, with the following inscriptions, was erected some years ago, at the distance of about a quarter of a mile to the north-west of the highroad, by Mr. Sharpe, who lived at Brockley Hill. — On the east side:

"Circiter haec loca stetitolim oppidum natura atque opera. —Munitum Suellanorum, qui duce Cassivelano. Romanorum terga viderunt. Qualis et quanti nominis fuit ille Britanniorum imperutor cui summa imperii bcllique admmistrando communi consilio permissa erant, Caesar in commentariis suis aeternae memoriae tradedit. Ab antique nomine burgo non multo abludit tredienium Brockly cujus loci editioris situm latus hoc orientali prospicit."

On the west side:

"Antiquam sedem Cassiorum nunc Cassiburiam facies haec occidentalis spectat."

On the north side:

" Sylva de Burgo vel arci Cassivelani, Borgham dicta a plaga Septentrionali sita est."

On the south side:

" Obcliscus hic mediam ostendis viam inter Londinum olim Trinovantum et verulamium hodie St. Albani vicum praempuam Cassiorum sedem."

The present Church was erected about the year 1632, on a piece of ground given to the parish by Mrs. Barbara Burnel, Sir Thomas Lake, and Mr, Robinson, a quarter of a mile from the site of the old church. It is built of brick, and consists of a nave and chancel, with an embattled tower, overgrown with ivy at the west end. On the north side of the communion-table is a magnificent tomb, in memory of Sir John Wolstenholme, Knt. at whose expence the church was built. He died 25th November, 1639. The inscription is on a large slab of black marble, supported by four pillars, under which lies the effigies of the deceased, upon a mattress. On the south side of the altar is the monument of John Wolstenholme, Esq. son of Sir John Wolstenholme, Bart. ami grandson of the last mentioned Sir John. Under a canopy of veined marble, supported by four pillars, is a black slab, on which are the effigies of the deceased, and his wife Dorothy Vere. He is represented lying on a mattress as a corpse, his lady, in a reclining attitude, as a mourner, habited in a close vest, with a necklace of beads, a small cap, and low head-dress.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

GREAT STANMORE is a parish and village on the road from Edgware to Watford, with a terminal station on the branch line from Harrow of the London and North Western railway, 2 west from Edgware terminal station on the Great Northern railway and 3 miles west from Mill Hill station on the Midland railway, 4 south-east from Watford and 10 from London. The parish is in the Harrow division of the county, Gore hundred and petty sessional division, Hendon union, Watford county court district, rural deanery of Harrow, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London: the village, about a mile in length, is built on the slope of a hill, near Bushey Heath, the summit of which commands extensive views of the Surrey hills, with the vale of Middlesex and the valley of the Thames intervening, and on the north the beautiful vale of Hertfordshire. It is lighted with gas from works at Stanmore Marsh, the property of the Stanmore Gas Company Limited, and supplied with water by the Colne Valley Water Company. The parish, situated 280 feet above the sea level, is said to be very healthy, and since the opening of the branch line from Harrow, the village has been enlarged by the erection of a number of good residences. The church of St. John the Evangelist, built in 1849—50, at a cost of £8,000, and opened 16 July, 1850, is an edifice of stone in the Decorated style, from designs by Mr. Henry Clutton, architect, consisting of chancel, with south aisle, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a lofty tower at the north-west angle, containing a clock and 6 bells, removed from the older church of Little Stanmore, ½ a mile south, in 1720: the stained east window is a memorial to Queen Adelaide; and there are others, to the Lady Harriet Howard, d. 16 Dec. 1846, and the Lady Isabella Howard, d. 16 Sept. 1845, daughters of William, 4th Earl of Wicklow K.P.: the church has been decorated with mural paintings and at the east end of the north aisle is a monument with recumbent effigy, executed by Nicholas Stone, at a cost of £200, to Sir John Wolstenholme kt. ob. 1639: in the old church was buried Sir John Wolstenholme kt. and bart. son of the preceding, ob. 1670, and his grandson, John Wolstenholme, to whom, with his wife Dorothy (Vere), there is a stately monument of white marble, with recumbent effigies, now in the tower: John Wolstenholme, temp. Edw. VI. the first of the family resident at Stanmore, is also said to have been buried in the old church: in the tower is also a tablet of white marble, inscribed to Catherine (Copley), wife of John James, first Marquess of Abercorn K.G.; she died 13 Sept. 1791; a mural tablet, with ten kneeling figures, to John Burnell, dated 1605 and, in the south aisle, a monument with recumbent effigy to George Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen K.G., K.T., P.C. a distinguished statesman, d. 14 December, 1860: the church has 350 sittings; all the earlier monuments mentioned were removed here from the old church, founded by Sir John Wolstenholme kt. which is still standing at a short distance westward: the building, now roofless, is a rectangular structure of red brick, with an embattled western tower and a porch designed by Stone: in the centre of the grass-grown floor is an elaborate tomb to the Hollond family, of Stanmore Hall, and here was buried Col. Lord Henry Beauclerk, d. 5 Jan. 1761, John Drummond esq. J.P. d. 1774, and others of both these families: in the churchyard is the grave of Charles Hart, a tragic actor of the 17th century. The register dates from the year 1599. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £324, with residence and 25 acres of glebe, in the gift of trustees of the late Rev. Leopold John Bernays M.A. late rector, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Stewart Frederick Lewis Bernays M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. Here is a strict Baptist chapel. The Memorial Institute, erected by subscription to the memory of Ernest Bernays, son of the Rev. Leopold John Bernays M.A. rector 1860—82, who was drowned in 1870, is a building in the Gothic style, used for parish meetings and entertainments, and will hold 280 persons. The Cottage Hospital, erected in 1890, near the London and North Western railway station, at the cost of the Misses Wickens, of Pynnacles, by whom it is entirely supported, has seven beds and one cot. Here is the extensive brewery of Messrs. T. Clutterbuck & Co. Bentley Priory, formerly the seat of the Duke of Abercorn, afterwards the residence of Queen Adelaide and since of the late Sir John Kelk bart. (d. 12 Sept. 1886) is now the property and residence of Frederick Gordon esq.: the mansion has a south aspect and occupies a delightful position, commanding very extensive views: the deer park, cedar gardens, terraces, lake and ornamental gardens cover 250 acres: it derives its name from a priory of Austin Canons existing here so early as 1243, on the site of which Roman coins have, been found; conservatories were added at a cost of £9,000 by Sir John Kelk: George IV. when Prince Regent, accompanied Alexander I. Emperor of Russia and Frederick William IV. King of Prussia here to meet Louis XVIII. when on his way from Hartwell, in Buckinghamshire, the abode of his exile, to re-ascend the throne of France, and during part of the regency and the latter half of the reign of George III. the Priory was a principal rendezvous of the Tory party: Queen Adelaide, who leased the Priory from 1848, died here 2nd December, 1849: the principal entrance is on the north side through a large ivy-covered carriage porch, leading to a spacious entrance hall, with a groined ceiling, supported by fluted columns: a panelled corridor conducts to a fine suite of reception rooms, a boudoir, a lofty dining-room and a drawing-room 50 by 30 feet, with fine marble mantelpieces: among the other apartments is one called “The Queen’s room,” having been the favourite chamber of Queen Adelaide; at the west end is a clock tower, and on the south side an Italian garden, with wide lawns sloping down to a deer park and to an ornamental lake 4 ¼ acres in extent, in a summer house on the margin of which Sir Walter Scott is said to have revised the proof sheets of “Marmion,” and the poet Rogers traditionally wrote some part of his “Pleasures of Memory” near the spot: on the north side is a cedar garden and orangery, roseries and a romantic fernery; the plantations and shrubberies are extensive, and are intersected by numerous delightful walks and drives of considerable length. Stanmore Park, formerly the residence of Lord Wolverton, is now occupied by H. Kemball-Cook esq. as a school: the park, which covers 20 acres, has been partly cut up for villa residences, but is mostly used by the Stanmore Golf Club; it contains a small lake, and an eminence called “Bell Mount,” from which the.; is a very extensive view. Bloomfield is the residence of Robert Stanhope Charles esq. The principal landowners are Thomas Clutterbuck esq. who is lord of the manor, Frederick Gordon esq. Charles Edward Keyser esq. M.A., F.S.A, of Aldermaston Court, Berks, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, and Mrs. Brightwen. The soil is clay at the bottom of the village and pebble or drift gravel towards the top; the subsoil being chalk, into which several public and private wells are sunk. The land is chiefly pasture. The area is 1,470 acres of land and 14 of water; rateable value £12,170; the population in 1891 was 1,473.
