GREENFORD is an agricultural parish, intersected by the Paddington canal and bounded on the south by the river Brent, 2 miles north from Hanwell station on the Great Western railway, 5 miles north from Hounslow, 3 south from Harrow town, 5 north from Brentford and 8 from London. It is in the Ealing division of the county, Elthorne hundred, Brentford petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Ealing, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London.

Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act. 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), an Urban District Council of nine members was formed in 1894 for the parish. The church of the Holy Cross is a small building of flint and brick in the Perpendicular style, consisting of narrow chancel, nave, south porch and a timbered western turret with low wooden spire containing 3 bells: in the nave is a curious mural monument with effigies to Bridget, wife of Simon Coston, dated 1637; on the north wall of the chancel is a monument with effigies to the Rev. Michael Gardiner, rector, dated 1630, and Margaret, his wife; Rev.-Castell, rector, ob. 1686; Rupert Browne, ob. 1710: there are four stained windows, the earliest portions being some canopies of the 14th century: there are also a number of fragments representing angels, saints, canopies, flowers and figures of a crowned hart, as well as shields of arms, Tudor badges and floriated grotesques of about the middle of the 16th century: the chancel arch was reconstructed in 1871, and in 1882 the church was thoroughly restored, the walls of the chancel being refaced, a new roof placed on the nave, fresh windows opened and the interior reseated: the font bears the name of Fras. Coston and the date 1638, and there are brasses with effigies to Richard Thornton, ob. 1544, and Alys, his wife; Thomas Symons, priest, ob. 1508; one of a priest with half effigy, c. 1450; and another to a lady, c. 1480; the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, yearly value £540, with 40 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of King's College, Cambridge, and held since 1898 by the Rev.

In addition to the school mentioned below, founded in 1780 by the Rev. Edward Betham, 10 poor men and women are also clothed by the charity, which is administered by a body of nine trustees. A police station was built in 1896. Stanhope Park is now occupied by Edward Otter esq. J.P. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, the trustees of Charles Bingley and others are the landowners. The soil is a clayey loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are grass and hay. The area is 2,111 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £6,209; the population in 1891 was 545 in the civil and 511 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Betham’s School (mixed & infants), founded in 1780 by the Rev. Edward Betham, & endowed with upwards of £200 yearly, for the education & clothing of 30 poor children; a new school of brick, with a turret & clock, was built in 1878, for 150 children; average attendance, 30 boys, 20 girls & 30 infants.
