Historical Description

HANWELL is an ancient place, given by Edward the Confessor to Westminster Abbey, on the banks of the river Brent and on the Uxbridge road and the Grand Junction canal, with a station on the Great Western railway, 7 ½ miles west from Paddington, a viaduct of eight arches carrying the railway across the road; the parish abounds in beautiful and picturesque scenery and is in the Brentford division of the county, the Western Metropolitan postal district, Elthorne hundred, Brentford petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Ealing, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The parish was governed by a Local Board of nine members, formed by Local Government Board Order 19,120, dated 27 August, 1885, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), an Urban District Council has been established; it is lighted with gas from works at Southall, the property of the Brentford Gas Company, and supplied with water by the Grand Junction Water Works Company. The parish church of St. Mary, built in 1841 on the site of the old church, at a cost of nearly £4,000, is a structure of flint and brick with stone dressings in the Early English style, by Messrs. Scott (afterwards Sir G. Gilbert Scott) and Moffatt; it consists of nave of five bays, transepts, aisles, south porch and a western tower with spire containing a clock and 2 bells: there are 700 sittings: the benevolent Joseph Hanway, who died 5 Sept. 1786, was buried in the old churchyard: his monument is in Westminster Abbey. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value from tithe rent-charge £291, with 25 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Muir Farquhar B.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. St. Mark’s church, erected in 1883, is a structure of brick in the Gothic style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave and aisles, and has 600 sittings. Here is a Catholic chapel, built in 1864, and dedicated to Our Lady and St. Joseph, with 150 sittings; a Baptist chapel, seating 600 persons, and a Wesleyan chapel with 300 sittings. There are two cemeteries, one of 20 acres belonging to the parish of St. Mary Abbotts, Kensington, with two mortuary chapels, and another of 24 acres, belonging to the parish of St. George, Hanover square, also with two mortuary chapels: these are under the control of a Burial Board of nine members, the cemetery of St. George’s being made available by arrangement for the parish of Hanwell. Hobbyns’s charity was founded in 1484, for the benefit of the poor and poor children; in 1878 a scheme was propounded, having for its principal objects the education of poor children and the provision of pensions for the poor; the estate consists of 22 acres, with an income of £150, and is managed by 11 trustees, the rector being chairman. The Catholic Convalescent Home for Women and Children, situated in the Uxbridge road, was erected in the year 1865, at the expense of Baroness Weld, and is supported by pensions paid for the inmates; the homo is available for 35 patients and received during the year 1893 about 190 women and children. Adjoining Hanwell, but in the parish of Norwood, is the Hanwell Lunatic Asylum, belonging to the County of London, first erected in 1829—31, but since repeatedly enlarged and greatly improved: the building, a conspicuous object from the railway, is constructed of brick in a simple Italian style, and consists of a central block with projecting wings at either end: both in front and rear are spacious grounds laid out with lawns and avenues of trees: the management of the patients is under the direction of two medical officers, one for the male and the other for the female department: the different wards are well supplied with books, games and musical instruments: the asylum will hold about 2,520 inmates: the chapel, in front of the main entrance, and erected in 1880, is an edifice of brick, in the Early English style, and has a lofty tower with spire containing one bell: there are about 1,000 sittings. Hanwell Park, The Spring, The Grove, Brent Lodge and many good residences are in this neighbourhood. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Col. Edward John Stracey-Clitherow J.P. of Boston House, New Brentford: Sir Joseph Layton Elmes Spearman bart. of The Hall, Wem, Salop, Mrs. Buchan and Mrs. Parsons. The land is principally pasturage and of copyhold tenure; soil, gravelly. The area is 1,054 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £35,047; the population in 1891, 6,139, including 915 in the Central London District schools.
