Historical Description
HANWORTH is a village and parish, 2 miles north-east from Sunbury station on the Shepperton branch and 1 ½ south-east from Feltham station on the Windsor and Reading section of the London and South Western railway, 3 south-west from Hounslow and 12 from Hyde Park Corner, in the Uxbridge division of the county, Spelthorne hundred and petty sessional division, Staines union, Chertsey county court district, and in the rural deanery of Hampton, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The Longford river flows through here. The church of St. George, standing in Hanworth Park, is an edifice of stone, part of which came from the old church, and was rebuilt in 1865, in the Early English style, at the sole cost of the late Algernon Perkins esq.: it consists of apsidal chancel, nave, north and south porches and an eastern tower with spire containing one bell: there are five stained windows: a lich gate of oak was built in 1882 at a cost of £350 from designs by Mr. G. Low, architect: there are sittings for about 200, all of which are free. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1731; marriages, 1732; no marriages here from 1807 to 1813 in consequence of the rebuilding of the church. The living is a rectory, yearly value £600, with residence, in the gift of the representatives of A. Perkins esq. and held since 1879 by the Rev. John Lyndhurst Winslow, of King’s College, London. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1868, and seating 100. The reading rooms, Hanworth road, near the schools, erected in 1884, form a structure of brick, in the Perpendicular style, from designs by Mr. George Low, architect, and cost £750; they are now used as the schoolmaster’s residence, and occasionally for educational purposes. There is a parish library of 1,000 volumes at the school Near the public footbath from Feltham to Hanworth are the remains of an ancient castle. Hanworth Park is partly in this and partly in the adjoining parish of Feltham: it is extensively wooded, and was formerly a royal residence and a crown domain, and became with Henry VIII. a favourite place of resort: Elizabeth, his daughter, resided here for some time during her earlier years, and in 1578, after her accession to the throne, and again in 1600, paid visits to the Duchess of Somerset, who then held the property: in 1627 it came into the hands of Sir Francis Cottington bart. created in 1631 Baron Cottington of Hanworth, and here in 1635 he entertained Queen Henrietta Maria: on the execution of the king the estate was confiscated and given to the regicide John Bradshaw, but was recovered at the Restoration by the Cottingtons: it was subsequently conveyed, through a marriage, to the Duke of St. Albans, and after other changes passed to the Perkins family, and here Mr. Henry Perkins collected a fine library of rare books and MSS. all of which were sold in 1873: on the death of Mr. Algernon Perkins, the last heir, the park was sold to Alfred Lafone, James Scarlett esquires and others, who have made extensive alterations and additions to their various properties: the old house was destroyed by fire in 1797, but the moat and a few traces of the buildings still remain near the west end of the church: the present mansion, the seat of Alfred Lafone esq. M.P. is a building of stone: the park, through which the river Longford runs, is 207 acres in extent. Messrs. Payne and Bettle, of Chertsey, are lords of the manor. Alfred Lafone esq. M.P., J.P. James Scarlett, William Whiteley and Henry Parnell esqrs. are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, loam. The chief crops are turnips, beans, peas and market produce in general; very little corn is grown.
The area is 1,292a. 9p. estimated extent of land and 20 of water; the rateable value, £8,839; the population in 1891 was 1,309.
A School Board of 5 members was formed 16 July, 1880; O. Jacob, Feltham, clerk to the board; Isaiah Bishop, attendance officer Board School (mixed), erected by subscription in 1848 on the site given by the late Henry Perkins esq. & enlarged in 1873, at a cost of £300, again in 1878, at a cost exceeding £300 & again in 1894 at a cost of about £850; it will now hold 345 children; average attendance, 156 boys & girls & 150 infants.
