Historical Description
HAREFIELD is a parish and village, bounded on the north by Rickmansworth in Herts, on the east by Ruislip, on the south by Uxbridge, and on the west by the parishes of West Hyde and Denham in Bucks, 4 miles north from Uxbridge station on the Great Western railway, 3 south-west from Northwood station on the Metropolitan extension railway to Rickmansworth and Chesham and 17 from London: the parish is in the Uxbridge division of the county, Elthorne hundred, Uxbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Uxbridge, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The river Colne, which bounds the parish on the west, and the Grand Junction canal run parallel to West Drayton. The village is supplied with water by the Rickmansworth and Uxbridge Valley Water Works Co. from their works at Rickmansworth, Herts. The church of St. Mary, erected about A.D. 1300, is a building of flint, stuccoed, in the late Decorated style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, with an arcade of three arches on the north, and four on the south, a chapel at the east end of the north aisle (attached to the manor house of Breakspears in this parish), north porch and a massive embattled tower at the west end of the north aisle, containing 3 bells and a sanctus bell: in a recess in the chancel are some excellent brasses to the Newdegate family, the earliest of which is to Editha, wife of William Newdigate, ob. 1444; there is another to John Newdegate, serjeant at law, ob. 15-, and Amphilisia (Nevell) his wife, ob. 1544, with effigies of both, 7 sons and 5 daughters, and a third to John Newdigate esq. ob. 1545, Anne his wife and 12 children: the altar tombs, mural tablets and floor stones to the Newdegate family are very numerous and are for the most part excellent examples of monumental art; they range from the earliest date above mentioned to 1806, but are principally of the 17th century and include, in the south aisle of Brackenbury chapel, monuments to Sir Richard Newdigate bart. ob. 1678, and Sir Roger Newdigate bart. d. Nov. 23, 1806: on the south side of the chancel is a tomb of alabaster, upon which is a recumbent effigy of Alice (Spencer), wife of Ferdinando, fifth Earl of Derby, ob. 1636; above rises a lofty canopy supported on pillars of black marble, and surmounting the deep cornice is a ribbed dome, terminating in a pedestal, on which is placed the armorial achievement of the Stanleys; on the sides of the tomb, within niches, are the kneeling effigies of her three daughters; the whole is elaborately carved, richly embellished in gold and colours, and emblazoned with heraldry: in the Breakspear chapel are numerous brasses and monumental tablets to members of the Ashby family, formerly lords of the manor of Breakspears; the former include one engraved, c. 1540, to George Assheby, clerk of the signet to Henry VIII. ob. 1514, and to Rose (Eden) his wife, with 7 children; and there are others to William Assheby, gent, and Jane his wife, 1537, with 8 children; George Assheby, and Margaret his wife, both d. 1474; Sir Robert Ashby kt. ob. 1617, and Sir Francis Ashby bart. ob. Dec. 23, 1623; the latest Ashby tablet is dated 1774: a par close screens this chapel from the aisle, between which and the nave is a memorial to John Prichett, Bishop of Gloucester, 1672—80, and curate here for 30 years: all the windows, except two in the north aisle, contain stained glass, principally heraldic: there is a small Perpendicular font in the north aisle and a piscina at the east end of the south aisle, in the same style: outside the chapel is a wall tablet with a medallion bearing in low relief figures of a keeper and his dog, with a quaint poetical inscription to Robert Mossenden, d. 5 Feb. 1744: this memorial was erected by his master, William Ashby, of Breakspears, esq.; the church was refitted, enlarged and beautified by the late Right Hon. Charles Newdigate Newdegate M.P., P.C., D.C.L. at a cost of upwards of £3,000: there are sittings for 500 persons. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1538; marriages, 1558. The living, originally a donative, but now a new vicarage, has been in the Newdigate family (with but a small interval) since the reign of Edward III.; annual endowment £25, with 8 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of Lieut.-Gen. Sir Edward Newdigate Newlegare K.C.B. of Arbury, Nuneaton, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Albert Augustus Harland M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford, F.S.A., F.R.S.L. The Breakspear Institute, erected by public subscription in 1896, at a cost, including fittings, of £800, is an edifice of red brick, comprising reading, smoking and bagatelle rooms, and a library containing over 350 volumes: there are new (1898) 102 members. Breakspears, half a mile southeast, the seat of Alfred Henry Tarleton esq. D.L., J.P. is an ancient manor house; Nicholas Breakspere, elected Pope in 1154 by the title of Adrian IV. being the only Englishman who ever occupied the Papal chair, once resided here. Frederick Cox D.L., J.P. has an attached and well-wooded park of 60 acres: Queen Elizabeth visited Sir Thomas Egerton at Harefield Place in 1602, and remained from July 31 to August 2; the mansion was burnt down in 1660, but was rebuilt by Sir Richard Newdigate bart. about 1675; his descendant, the Right Hon. Charles N. Newdegate M.P., P.C. (d. 1887), however, removed this house towards the end of the last century. Harefield Park, now occupied by C. Billyard-Leake esq. is the property of B. Wentworth Vernon esq. and consists of 135 acres. Moor Hall, an old manor house, is now converted into cottages, some of which still retain large fireplaces and ancient panelling, and hard by are the remains of an Early English chapel, with a good timber roof.
