The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone and flint, partly in the Perpendicular style, but with some remains of Norman work, and consists of chancel, with north aisle, or Lady chapel, built by Wiliam of Wykeham, have of four bays, aisles, south porch and a tower of flint and brick at the south-west angle containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel retains a piscina and some stalls, and there is an Early Norman doorway on the south side: all the brasses were stolen during the restoration in 1863: the old north wall ranges with what is now the south aisle, the arcade being of the 12th century, and the bays irregular in span: the Perpendicular alterations on the north side of the chancel are continued into the first bay of the nave and end very abruptly: the church was restored in 1863 and affords 400 sittings. Early in the year 1870, when a grave of unusual depth was being dug, some silver coins, twenty-five in all, dating from the Tudor and Stuart periods, were discovered. The register dates from the year 1672. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £847, including 192 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the lord of the manor, and held since 1882 by the Rev. John Charles Taylor M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. Here is a Baptist chapel, re-erected 1884, at a cost of about £600, with sittings for 300 persons. A cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1870, and is now (1898) being enlarged to 3 acres; it is under the control of a Burial Board of six members, but has no mortuary chapel. Here was anciently a Benedictine priory, a cell to the abbey of La Trinity, at Rouen. Near the church is a fine barn of the 14th century, divided into three alleys by two rows of massive columns, and the upper floor has an open timbered roof. In the southern part of the parish are traces of an ancient entrenchment. The trustees of the late John Charles Taylor esq. are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are the Earl of Strafford, Henry Horace Powell Cotton esq. of Qnex Park, Thanet, Kent, Dr. Whipham and Messrs. Fred Hunt, Thomas Wild and James Scholey. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are market garden produce, wheat, barley, oats, mangold wurtzel and potatoes, but large quantities of strawberries are also grown here; the land to the south-west, which has a gravel subsoil, being very productive.
