Historical Description

Hayes has a large handsome church, the chancel of which is curiously ornamented it contains several ancient monuments and some of a more modern date.

Acton is supposed to derive its name from tire number of oak trees growing there; ac, in the Saxon languages signifying an oak. About a mile to the north are some medicinal springs, called Acton which about the middle of the 18th century, were in much repute, and an assembly-room was erected for the accomodation of the company; they belong to the Duke of Devonshire.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HAYES, in Domesday “Hesa” (A. S. Halg, a hedge), is a parish and village, on the road from London to Uxbridge, with a station one mile south from the village, on the main line of the Great Western railway, 3 ½ miles south-east from Uxbridge and 11 ½ from Oxford street, in the Uxbridge division of the county, Elthorne hundred, Uxbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Uxbridge, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. Water is supplied by the Rickmansworth and Uxbridge Valley Water Works Co. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is an ancient edifice of flint and rubble, in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, with clerestory, aisles, vestry, organ chamber, south porch of wood and an embattled tower at the west end containing a dock and 6 bells: the former altar-piece, a large oil painting, representing the “Adoration of the Shepherds,” has been removed to the east end of the north aisle: the roof of the nave and chancel is of oak, waggon vaulted: the interesting south porch of oak is early 14th century work: the font is probably of the 13th century: the lych-gate is peculiar, being exceptionally wide, and the gate itself is single and works on a central pivot, similar to a turnstile: in the chancel is an altar-tomb with effigy to Sir Edward Fenner kt. justice of the King’s Bench, temp. James I. who died 23 Jan. 1611—12: in the north aisle is a Purbeck slab with the brass effigy of a knight in armour, and an inscription to Walter Grene, ob. 1423, and in the south aisle an altar-tomb with brass effigies to Thomas Higate. ob. 1576, his wife and 9 children, with inscriptions; there are other memorials to the Rev. Samuel Spence, rector, d. 1730, and William Walker, astronomer, d. 1816: the stained east window was presented in 1876 by the wife of the present rector; other stained windows, chiefly memorials, have been erected to Sarah Elizabeth, wife of Edward Shackle esq. of Botwell House, d. 22 Dec. 1884, and to two of their children; also to Henry Edward Neild, capt. 45th (Derbyshire) Regiment, eldest son of Major-General H. J. T. Neild, d. 14 Nov. 1882; Harriet Mason, d. 6 Feb. 1885; Alfred Ernest Bowles, d. at Colorado Springs, U.S.A. 4 July, 1889: in the vestry is an interesting table of oak, richly carved and inlaid, with the initials “J. W.” and the date, 1605: the chancel retains piscina and sedilia and an aumbry: the church is seated throughout with chairs for 450 persons. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a rectory, yearly value £625, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of Mrs. Godding, and held since 1872 by the Rev. John Godding M.A. of Hertford College, Oxford. The Manor House, formerly the palace of Archbishop Cranmer, is now the residence of the rector: one of the rooms is panelled and has a lofty carved chimney piece, and the house contains other fine work, but was much modernized in 1862: the garden retains traces of a moat, and beyond it is an avenue of limes: Robert Wright, first warden of Wadham College, Oxford, and afterwards Bishop of Bristol (1622—32) and of Lichfield and Coventry (1632—43), was rector here at the beginning of the 17th century. There are Baptist, Congregational and Wesleyan chapels. The principal charities are those of Dr. Triplett of £300 yearly, for educating and apprenticing children of this parish: the founder also left funds for exhibitions to scholars of St. Peter’s College, Westminster, which are still known by his name, and to the schools of Petersham and Richmond; Blencowe’s charity, left in 1802 by the Rev. William Blencowe, and consisting of £724 12s. in £2 ¾ per Cent. Consols, produces £21 annually; Parker’s, left in 1824 by Elizabeth Parker and consisting of £1,000 £3 per Cent. Annuities, produces £30 yearly; and Curzon's, left by the Hon. Juliana Curzon in 1834, and consisting of £400 in £2 ¾ per Cent. Annuities, produces £11 yearly; a legacy of £400 was left in 1889, by the late Miss Davis, of The Shrubbery, for poor widows, to be distributed at the discretion of the rector and churchwardens, and £100 to be distributed yearly in the purchase of grey calico for the poor: there are a few minor charities, amounting altogether to about £10 annually. The Great Western railway passes through the southern part of the parish, and the Paddington canal diverges from the Grand Junction into the south part of the same and crosses the road between the village and Southall, proceeding thence to the north of Greenford, Perivale and Twyford and to Kensal Green and Paddington. Park House, the seat of the Misses Shackle, stands in grounds of 23 acres. Lord Hillingdon, who is lord of the manor, William Minet esq. of 48 Gloucester square, London W, Mrs. Edward Hinds Shackle, Mrs. Thomas Shackle, Thomas Salt esq. of Weeping Cross, Stafford, Samuel Unwin esq. of Norwood, Middlesex, and Oscar William Holden-Hambrough esq. of Pipewell Hall, Kettering, are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, hay and fruit. The area is 3,278 acres of land and 33 water; rateable value, £20,991; the population in 1891 was 2,651.
