Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HESTON is a parish and village, a mile and a quarter from Heston-Hounslow station on the Metropolitan District railway and 2 north from Hounslow station of the London and South Western railway, and 11 from Hyde Park corner, in the Brentford division of the county, Isleworth hundred, Brentford petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Ealing, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. Heston and Isleworth were formed into a Local Board District (including the town of Hounslow) by 38 & 39 Vict, c. 74, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act of 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), an Urban District Council of 20 members has been established; the Council sits at Hounslow, under which heading full particulars are given. The parish is lighted with gas by the Brentford Gas Company and supplied with water from the Grand Junction Water Works. The church of St. Leonard, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1866, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, gabled north aisle, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with angle turret, containing a clock and 6 bells: there are monuments to the Osterley and other families of the neighbourhood and brasses with effigies to Mar-do-cheus or Mordecai Bownell, vicar, ob. 1581, and to Constance his wife, c. 15,80. and to Richard Awnsham, parson, ob. 1612; the east and west windows are stained, and there are 600 sittings: the churchyard is entered by a lych-gate of oak. The register dates from, the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £600, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Benj. Oswald Sharp Th.Assoc, of King’s College, London. The parish room, erected in 1880 and used for week day evening services and Lectures, will hold 180 persons. The Workmen’s Club or Westbrook Memorial is a building of red brick, erected in 1867 by Mrs. Westbrook, of Heston, as a memorial to her husband, Edward Westbrook, who died in 1864. Here are extensive brick works. A fair is held on the 1st of May. Osterley House, the seat of the Earl of Jersey P.C., G.C.M.G. situated north-west of Brentford, is a large rectangular mansion of red brick with square turrets at the angles, finished with ogee-shaped domical roofs; on the principal front is a lofty hexastyle pedimented portico, approached by a broad flight of steps, and within is a large open court; the building, erected on the foundation of the old house, was originally built by Sir Thomas Gresham, founder of the Royal Exchange, who entertained Queen Elizabeth here in 1578: about 1655 it was sold, with the manor, to the famous Parliamentary general, Sir William Waller, and at a later period it became the property of Mr. Francis Child, the banker, who began the rebuilding of the house under the direction of Robert Adam, architect, a work completed by his brother William, the turrets however of Gresham’s mansion being retained: it now belongs to his descendant, the Earl of Jersey, Lady Sarah Sophia Fane, daughter of the tenth Earl of Westmorland and grand-daughter of Mr. Child, having married the fifth Earl of Jersey, grandfather of the present Earl: the hall contains a fine painting of the apotheosis of William the Silent, by Rubens; the gallery, 130 feet long, and the state rooms, also contain many good pictures, including family portraits. The park, of about 500 acres, contains a large lake. The manor of Syon belongs to the Duke of Northumberland K.G. and that of Heston to the Earl of Jersey. The Earl of Jersey, Alfred William Nicholes esq. and the vicar of Heston are the chief landowners. Sir Joseph Banks bart. K.B., P.R.S. and founder of the Linnaean Society, lived at Smallbury Green, in this parish, and died 19th June, 1820. Anthony Collins, of King’s College, Cambridge, a deistical writer of the 17th century, was born here 21st June, 1676. The soil is chiefly brick earth. The crops are wheat, hay, fruit and garden produce. Heston is famous, for its wheat, which, in Queen Elizabeth’s time, was reserved for making “manchets” for the royal table. The area is 3,787 acres of land and 36 of water; rateable value, £50,315, and the population in 1871 was 8,432 and in 1881 9,738, and in 1891, 10,389; this includes Hounslow. The population attached to the parish church in 1891 was 2,730.

The area of Heston and Isleworth Urban District is 6,967 acres; rateable value, £93,956; the population iff 1891 was 26,273.

A School Board of 7 members was formed 10 March, 1879; H. R. Peake, Town hall, Hounslow, clerk.

Board School, for 400 children; number on the books, 384; average attendance, 111 boys, 103 girls & 81 infants.
