The river Pinn runs through the parish. Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882,” a detached part of Hillingdon has been added to this parish. The church of St. Giles is a small and ancient edifice of flint and brick, in the Early Decorated, Transition and Early Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, wide north aisle, south porch and a small wooden belfry with a dwarf spire, containing 4 bells, dated 1582: at the eastern end of the south wall are two piscinae: the font is Perpendicular: on the south side of the communion table is a brass to William Say, gent, “register to the Queen’s Majesty in causes ecclesiastical,” ob. 1582, with effigies of himself, wife and 16 children, and bearing heraldic escutcheons: opposite is a very fine brass with inscription, effigy, and shields of arms to Edmonde Shordiche, ob. 1584, his wife and 3 children; the Shordiches were connected with this parish as lords of the manor, patrons, or rectors, for several centuries, until the advent of the present family of Clarke of Swakeleys at the end of the last century, and there are numerous mural tablets and floor stones to the members of both families: the church affords 200 sittings, and in the churchyard is a fine yew tree.Stolen from Forebears.co.uk The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, yearly value £400, including between 300 and 400 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late William Capel Qarke-Thornhill esq. and held since 1859 by the Rev. The trustees of the late W. C. Clarke-Thornhill esq. who are lords of the manor, and G. Hilliard esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil, gravel. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 1,464 acres; rateable value, £3,156; the population in 1891 was 396 in the civil and 368 in the ecclesiastical parish.
