Historical Description

Kingsbury Church is a small structure, consisting of a nave and a chancel, with a wooden turret and spire at the west end. Dr. Stukeley supposes It to stand within the site of a Roman camp, which was Cesar’s second station after he had passed the Thames.

There are no monuments of considerable antiquity, or particularly interesting; the most ancient is a tomb in the nave, of John Shepard, 1520, with a brass plate, on which is engraven the figure of the deceased.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

KINGSBURY, in Domesday “Chingesberie” and later “Kyngesbyrig,” is a parish, on the river Brent, 1 ½ miles south-west of the Welsh Harp and Hendon stations on the Midland railway, about 2 miles north-west of Dudding Hill station on the Midland and South-Western Junction line, and about 2 miles south-south-east from Kingsbury Green is Kingsbury-Neasdon station on the Metropolitan Extension railway, 8 south-east from Watford, and 6 from London: the parish is in the North-Western Metropolitan postal district, in the Harrow division of the county, Gore hundred and petty sessional division, Hendon union, Watford county court district, and in the rural deanery of Hartow, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The ancient church of St. Andrew, formerly belonging to this parish, has been assigned to the ecclesiastical parish of Neasdon-cum-Kingsbury: the present parish church of the Holy Innocents, erected on a site more convenient for the parishioners in 1883—4, is a building of grey and coloured brick and stone in the Gothic style of the 14th century, and at present consists only of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1732. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, including 3 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Lambart Campbell Edwards M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Brent reservoir, a lake formed in 1838 to supply the Regent’s canal, covers 350 acres, and is a conspicuous feature in the north-west view from Hampstead Heath, extending along the bottom of a valley 1 ½ miles in length, by the course of the Brent river, the entire circumference being about 8 miles; water-fowl are frequently seen here, and there is abundance of fish. Day tickets for fishing at 1s. and 2s. 6d. can be obtained at the “Old Welsh Harp.” The Warden and Fellows of All Souls College, Oxford, who are lords of the manor, and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and Mr. William Burton, are the principal landowners. The soil is gravel and clay; subsoil, clayey. The land is chiefly pasture. The area is 1,808 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £6,420; the population in 1891 was about 581.

The Western part of The Hyde only is in this parish.

cleared at 10.15 a.m. 4 & 7.50 p.m.; Sundays, 10.15 p.m.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 23 Dec. 1875; W. A. Tootell, Edgware, clerk to the board.
