Historical Description
Stanmore Parva, or Whitchurch, at Canons, was the magnificent mansion, erected in 1742, by Mr. Brydges, afterwards Duke of Chandos. Vertue describes it as "a noble square pile, all of stone, the four sides almost, alike, with statues in the front; within was a small square of brick, not handsome, the out-offices of brick and stone, very Convenient and well disposed. The hall richly adorned with marble statues, busts, &c. The ceiling of the staircase by Thorn-hill; the grand apartments finely adorned with paintings, sculpture, and furniture. The columns which supported the building were all of marble, as was the great staircase, each step of which was one entire block, twenty feet in length. The whole expence of the building and furniture is said to have amounted to 200, 000l. After the death of the duke his magnificent mansion was pulled down, and the materials sold by auction in the year 1747. The grand staircase is now in Lord Chesterfield’s house in May Fair. An equestrian statue of George J. which stood in the park, is now in the centre of Leicester Square.
The villa erected upon the site of Canons was sometime the residence of Dennis O’Kelly, Esq. the well-known possessor of the famous horse Eclipse, whose bones lie buried in the park.
The parish Church was rebuilt at the expence of the Duke of Chandos, about the year 1715. It consists of a chancel and nave, distinguished by the ascent of a step. The ceiling and walls were painted by Laguere; the Nativity and a Dead Christ, on each side the altar, by Belluchi. Behind is a recess for the organ, supported by columns of the Corinthian order; in the back ground, are paintings of Moses receiving the law, and Christ preaching.
On the north side of the church is a spacious light vault, built by the Duke of Chandos tor the interment of his family. Over the vault is a large chamber, paved with marble, at the west end of which is the monument of James Duke of Chandos, the founder. His effigies, as large as life, is represented in the Roman habit, between his two first wives, who are in mourning attitudes. It has the following inscription:
"In hopes of a joyful resurrection, here lyeth the body of the most noble James Brydges, Duke of Chandos, Marquis and Earl of Caernarvon, Viscount Wilton, Baron Chandos of Sudely, and Baronet, Member of his Majesty’s most honourable Privy Council, Lord Lieutenant and Costus Rotulorum of the county of Radnor, High Steward of Cantremeleruth, Chancellor of the University of St. Andrew’s in Scotland, Ranger of Enfield Chace, and one of the governors of Charter House, who was horn June 6th, 1673, and departed this life August 9th, 1744, whose modesty ordered all encomiums on his tomb to be avoided; yet justice to his memory and truth tell the reader that, if a youth spent in constant application to business, which tended more to the good of his country and friends than his own, a whole life passed in acts of the greatest humanity and charity, forgiving every one, and giving to the utmost of his power, ended in an old age dedicated to patience, resignation, and piety, deserve from mankind gratitude and love, they are most strictly his due. He married first Mary, daughter of Sir Thomas Lake, of Canons in Middlesex; by whom he left issue the most noble Henry Duke of Chandos. His second wife was Cassandra, daughter of Sir Francis Willoughby, of Wollaton, and sister of Thomas Lord Willoughby. His third wife was Lydia Catherine, daughter of John Vanhatum, Esq. and widow of Sir Thomas Davall, who was member of parliament, and died in the year 1714. "
In this chamber there are several other monuments of the Chandos family.
There is small Free School, in this parish, for the children of parishioners, and tenants of the manor, founded by Sir Launcelot Lake, in 1656, and endowed with certain lands, charged with the payment of 15l. per annum to the master; the residue to charitable uses.
Edgeware Church is situated near the centre of the town, by the road-side, and consists of a chancel and nave, which are of brick, and were rebuilt about the year 1764. At the west end is a low square tower, embattled, an old building of stone and flints. Among the monuments the most ancient is one to the memory of Randulph Nicol, dated 1658. Within the rails is a brass of an infant, three weeks old, viz. Anthonie, son of John Childe. 1599.
Francis Coventry, curate of this place, was author of a well-known romance, called "the Life of Pompey the Little," and wrote a poem, called "Penshurst," printed in Dodsley’s Collections.
LITTLE STANMORE parish, in recent documents, is always alluded to as Little Stanmore alias Whitchurch and the church rectory and adjacent houses are popularly known as Whitchurch. The church of St. Lawrence, erected, with the exception of the tower, about 1715, is an edifice of brick in the Italian style and consists of chancel, with a mortuary chapel on the north side (built by James, Duke of Chandos and now belonging to Earl Temple as heir of the last Duke of Buckingham and Chandos), nave, south porch and a western tower, erected about 1550, containing one fine toned bell: the 15th century nave and chancel were pulled down by the Duke of Chandos in the reigns of Queen Anne and George I. and were rebuilt about 1715, in the same style as the Palace at Canons on the erection of which the Duke was then engaged: the decorators and artists employed on the work were the celebrated wood-carver, Grinling Gibbons, his father-in-law, the ironworker, the celebrated Antonio Verrio, and Bellucci and Laguerre: the ceiling of the church is divided into compartments, each containing an illustration of one of Our Lord’s chief miracles: the walls are covered with figures of the Evangelists, also of St. Peter and St. Paul and the three Christian graces, and on either side of the altar are representations of “the Nativity,” and “the Dead Christ,” by Bellucci: the chancel is separated from the nave by an iron gate of good workmanship: the organ, built by Father Schmidt in Queen Anne's reign, was rebuilt and enlarged in 1878; the case is adorned with two groups of cherub heads said to be by Gibbons’ own hand; behind are paintings of “Moses receiving the Law” and of “Our Lord delivering the Sermon on the Mount.” Handel was for three years (1718—21) chapel master at the Palace of Canons, and his “Acis and Galatea,” the “Chandos Anthems,” the oratorio of “Esther,” and two “Te Deums" were produced during this period: the mortuary chapel constructed over the family vault, is also beautifully decorated with wall paintings by Verrio and contains the remains of more than 60 members of the Brydges and Grenville families; the memorials include a fine monument to the Duke of Chandos, who died at Canons, 9th Aug. 1744, with his statue in Roman costume, between kneeling effigies of Mary (Lake), his first wife: and Cassandra (Willoughby), his first duchess and second wife: here also was buried his second duchess Lydia Catherine (Vanhattem), who died in 1750; the monument room was restored by the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos in 1865; no burial, however, has taken place in this chapel for many years: at the west end of the church is a gallery, the ceiling of which is adorned with a copy of Raphael’s “Ascension,” by Bellucci: there are some fine stained windows illustrative of the works of Handel: William Powell, the “Harmonious Blacksmith,” of Edgware, who died 27th February, 1780, was parish clerk during the time Handel was organist of this church; his gravestone in the churchyard is carved with representations of an anvil and hammer and the musical notes which form the running bass of “the melody called the Harmonious Blacksmith”: the church was carefully and thoroughly restored in 1865, and is now (1898) again being restored: it has 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £290, with one acre of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Rev. John Burton Norman M.A. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Henry Edwin Robinson M.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. The rectory house, partially rebuilt by the Rev. H.J.B. Norman, rector from 1868 to 1897, adjoins the church and is very pleasantly situated. Near the church are the Lake almshouses, forming three sides of a quadrangle, founded previous to 1693, by Mary, widow of Sir Thomas Lake kt. of Canons for seven poor persons, but the endowment now only supports four; this charity had an income of £33 yearly, augmented in the year 1875 by a legacy of £1,000 bequeathed by Miss Harriet Hurst; each inmate receives 7s. per week. At Little Stanmore formerly stood “Canons,” the residence of the celebrated Duke of Chandos, built, by him at a cost of £250,000; it was begun in 1715, the architects successively employed being James Gibbs, James and Sheppard, and was a magnificient pile of stone, three storeys in height, in the Italian style and quadrangular in plan, with a central court; the south front, divided into eleven bays, and rusticated in the two lower stages, was adorned in the centre with six fluted Ionic pilasters, and the parapet with as many symbolical statues; the principal avenue leading to the mansion from Edgware was a mile long; in 1747 this palace was pulled down and the materials disposed of by auction for £11,000; the house now called “Canons,” was built by Mr. Hallett, a cabinet maker, of Long Acre, London, with some of the materials of the original house; it is now (1898) unoccupied, and part of the estate is being built upon. Thomas M. Clutterbuck esq. of Great Stanmore, is lord of the manor. The area is 1,572 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £5,870; population in 1891 was 926.
