Historical Description

Hadley, a mile from Barnet, is a small pleasant village, chiefly inhabited by people of fortune. The church is a very ancient structure, and is supposed to stand on the highest ground of any church in England; it has a beacon on the top, which was used as a signal in the time of the rebellion. From the church-yard and around it are fine prospects over Enfield Chace, the river Thames, and the county of Essex.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HADLEY (or Monken Hadley), from the Saxon word “Headleagh” (high place) and the fact that the manor once belonged to the monks of Walden Abbey, is a parish on high land, adjoining Enfield Chase, 1 mile north from Barnet and 12 from the General Post Office, in the Enfield division of the county, hundred of Edmonton, South Mimms petty sessional division, county court district and union of Barnet, embracing part of High street, Barnet, and is on the lines of road to the Midland counties. There is a station near here at Beech Hill, called “Hadley Wood,” on the Great Northern railway. The nearest station, however, to the Hadley Woods from London is New Barnet. The parish is lighted with gas and supplied with water from works at New Barnet, the property of the Barnet Gas and Water Co. The church of St. Mary, situated near the common, is a cruciform structure of cut flint and Bath stone arranged in chequers, in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, south porch and a western tower of flint with stone quoins, nearly covered with ivy and bearing the date 1494: it contains a clock and 6 bells: and on the top is an iron beacon, the only one remaining, it is believed, in the county, supposed to have been used in former times as a guide to those traversing the neighbouring forest, but fired at 1745, during the Stuart rising; on 10 March, 1863, on the occasion of the marriage of the Prince of Wales; on 21 June, 1887, on the occasion of the jubilee of H.M. Queen Victoria, and also on the occasion of the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of York, 6 July, 1893: at the west end is a monument with marble busts by Nicholas Stone to Sir Roger Wilbraham kt. ob. 1616, and his wife; and there is a mural brass to Anne (Goodyere), wife of Walkeden, ob. 1575: there are also some remains of ancient glass with the rebus of the Goodyere family: the church was thoroughly restored in 1848—50, under the direction of the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. when both aisles were widened: there are memorial tablets to the Rev. I. R. Thackeray and the Rev. Frederick Charles Cass M.A. both former rectors, and several stained windows, two being memorials to the mother and daughter of the Rev. F. C. Cass M.A. rector, 1860—91: the south porch was rebuilt in 1855, as a memorial to the Rev. G. H. Procter, son of the Rev. George Proctor: the vestry was built in 1888: the church affords 400 sittings: in the churchyard is buried Mrs. Hester Chapone, authoress, d.25 Dec. 1801; John Monro M.D. a celebrated physician, d. 27 Dec. 1791; and the Rev. George Proctor D.D. a former rector, d. 1882. The register dates from 1619. The living is a donative rectory, yearly value £164, including 45 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Frederick Charles Guise Cass M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. There are two almshouses, one founded by Sir Roger Wilbraham kt. in 1616. for six “decayed housekeepers,” and endowed with £18 each a year; the other, rebuilt by subscription in 1822, was founded in the 17th century by Sir Justinian Pagitt kt. and consists of a house for six occupants, three men and three women. Hadley Common, consisting of about 250 acres of woodland, is the property of the freeholders of the parish and formed a portion of the Royal Chase of Enfield, allotted to the parish of Hadley in 1777 by Act of Parliament, 17 Geo. III. The lower or easternmost portion, known as “Hadley Wood,” is a beautiful stretch of woodland extending to the hamlet of Cock Fosters, and is much frequented by picnic and other parties. The upper part is sometimes called “Gladmore Heath” and sometimes “Monkey (i. e. Monken) Mead.” Near here, in all probability, the greater part of the battle of Barnet took place, on Easter Sunday, April 14th, 1471, when Richard Nevill, Earl of Warwick and Salisbury K.G. the “king maker” and his brother, John Nevill, Marquis of Montacute, were both slain. An approximate site is marked by an obelisk standing just outside Wrotham Park, the seat of the Earl of Stratford. At the southwest end of the common, near the church, is an ancient oak, mentioned by Lord Lytton in “The Last of the Barons,” and a short distance from this another tree, called “Latimer’s Elm.” From the highest ground a fine view is obtained of the Kent and Essex hills and sometimes of the Thames. Hadley is the reputed birthplace (1646) of Sir Robert Atkyns kt. M.P. for Gloucestershire and the historian of that county. Sir William Stamford kt. an eminent lawver of the 16th century, is noticed by Fuller as born at Hadley in 1509, and buried here in 1558. Mrs. Trollope, the novelist (d. 1863), William M. Thackeray, grandfather of the well-known novelist, and Professor Joseph Henry Green F.R.S., D.C.L. (d. 1863) were for some time resident here. The reading room, an iron building, erected in 1896 at a cost of about £300, is supplied with the daily papers and with magazines, and contains also a billiard table. Miss Wyburn is lady of the manor. The trustees of the late Bernhard Cooper Lee Bevan esq. J.P. of Trent Park, Enfield (d. 1890) and J. J. Elliot esq. and H. W. Taylor esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is gravelly; subsoil, clay. The chief crop is grass. The area is 669 acres; rateable value, £10,188; the population in 1891 was 1,302.
