Historical Description

PERIVALE is a parish, adjoining Ealing on the north, intersected by the Paddington canal and the river Brent, 2 miles north from Ealing station on the Great Western railway, 2 south from Sudbury station on the London and North Western railway, 4 north from Brentford and 6 from London, in the Western metropolitan postal district, Ealing division of the county, Elthorne hundred, Brentford petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Ealing, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. This place was formerly known as “Greenford Parva” and has only borne its present name, which Lysons regards as a corruption of Parva, since the 16th century; in the reign of Edward III. it was called “Cornhill.” The church (name unknown) is a small building of stone in the Early Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower of wood, with pyramidal roof and containing 2 bells: in the chancel is a brass, with effigies, to Henry Myllet, his two wives and 15 children, dated 1500: the chancel, which is very highly decorated, is separated from the nave by a low screen of 17th century work; there is a fine marble monument by Westmacott to Ellen Frances, daughter of the late Dr. Nicholas, who kept a school at Ealing, at which the late Cardinal Newman was educated; there are other memorials to the family of Mylett, and to those of Lane, Lateward and Harrison: the Very Rev. Philip Fletcher, dean of Kildare, was buried here in 1765: there are eight stained windows: the church affords 80 sittings. The churchyard is well kept and contains several interesting memorials. The register of baptisms dates from 1707; marriages and burials, 1720. The living is a rectory, yearly value £250, with residence and about 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. Henry C. Jenour, and held since 1861 by the Rev. Charles Joseph Hughes M.A., LL.D, of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Madame Cormont and Mrs. Grace Murry are the principal landowners. The soil is day; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are hay. The area is 631 acres; rateable value, £1,369; the population in 1891 was 55, there being only nine inhabited houses.
