Historical Description

RUISLIP is a village and parish, 4 miles north-east from Uxbridge station on the Great Western railway, 4 southwest from Pinner station of the London and North Western railway and 2 ½ south-west from the Pinner station of the Metropolitan railway, and 15 from London, in the Uxbridge division of the county, Elthorne hundred, Uxbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district and in the rural deanery of Uxbridge, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The parish is partly supplied with water by the Colne Valley Water Co. from their works at Bushey. The church of St. Martin is an edifice of flint, chalk and stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, embattled nave of six bays, aisles, western porch and a lofty embattled tower at the west end of the south aisle containing a clock and 8 bells: in 1857 some very curious paintings of the 15th century were discovered, one of which, on the wall at the east end of the north aisle, represents St. Michael weighing souls, with the Virgin crowned standing by; above the nave arcade is a series of paintings probably illustrating the life of St. Martin; and there are other paintings in the chancel and over the north door, as well as in the south aisle: the church contains ten stained windows; the east window is a memorial to Ellen Catherine Baker, d. 1869; the west window was given by the Rev. Christopher Packe, vicar from 1834, to commemorate the restoration of the church; the four in the south aisle are memorials to various members of the Pritchard family; in the chancel is a memorial window to the Rev. Daniel Carter Lewis, a former vicar, and in the north aisle is another to Juliana Rebecca, 2nd wife of Sir Hugh Hume-Campbell bart. of High Grove, Eastcote; she died 11 Oct. 1886: the chancel retains a piscina, and has marble monuments to Mary (Hawtrey), widow of the Hon. Sir John Bankes kt. Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas; she died c. 1645; and the judge, who died 28 Dec. 1644, was buried in Oxford Cathedral; there is also a memorial to Raphe Hawtrey, father of Lady Bankes, ob. 1638, and his wife, ob. 1647; a brass, with effigies to John Hawtrey esq. J.P. ob. 1593, and Bridget, his wife; and a memorial to John Hawtrey esq. ob. 1674; there are others to Jane, wife of James, son of Sir C. Clitherow, Lord Mayor of London, ob. 1636, and to Thomas Bright, a former vicar, ob. 1673: in the nave is a brass, with effigy, to Mary (Living), wife of Abraham Keene, dated 1696: at the west end of the church are the arms of the Dean and Canons of Windsor and of King’s College, Cambridge: in the vestry are two fine oak chests, with iron bands and locks, and a copy of Bishop Jewell's “Apology of the Church of England:” the font is a late Norman work of Purbeck marble, consisting of a basin, supported on four circular shafts, rising from a stone base: the tower was rebuilt in 1830, and in 1870 the chancel was restored under the direction of Mr. Ewan Christian, and the rest of the fabric by the late Sir G. G. Scott R.A.: there are 500 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1689; burials, 1695; marriages, 1699. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £426, including 260 acres of glebe, with residence in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, and held since 1878 by the Rev. Thomas Marsh Everett M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. A new vicarage house, in the Elizabethan style, was built in 1881. Mrs. E. Rogers, in 1802, left £380 to be invested in Consols, out of which £2 2s. was to be paid to the vicar if he preached on Good Friday and the remainder to be given to the poor, who, not being recipients of parochial charities, most regularly attend service at church. This charity in 1890 produced about £16 yearly, and is distributed by the churchwardens after Easter: Mrs. Charlotte Howard gave £160 Consols, the interest of £100, to purchase every Christmas Eve 2 lbs. of beef and 1 quartern loaf for each of 25 poor families of Eastcote and the interest of £60 to purchase 6 pairs of blankets for 6 poor families on every New Year’s day: Jeremiah Bright’s gift, left in 1697, consists of 2s. weekly for bread for the poor, which is distributed every Sunday morning by the vicar. There are 10 church houses supposed to have been built about 1730 by Mary, wife of Sir Thomas Francklyn bart. of Moor Park, Herts, daughter of Ralph Hawtrey esq. of this place, and widow of Christopher Clitherow esq. of Pinner: they have no endowment, but Lady Francklyn left in her will £100, the interest of which was to be given annually on St. Thomas’ day in clothing to the tenants. Ruislip Park, about 40 acres in extent, is the property of Mrs. Thompson, of 34 The Grove, Boltons, London S.W. and the residence of Cornelius Thompson esq.
