Historical Description

Near Shepperton is an inclosed ground, called Warr Close, where have been dug up spurs, swords, &c. and great quantities of human bones ; and at a little distance to the west, part of a Roman camp, described by Dr. Stukely, who gives an engraving of it. According to tradition, Coway Stakes, about half a mile west from Shepperton, was the place where Caesar crossed the Thames. Mr. Gale confirms this tradition, by describing a large Homan camp, double trenched, on the top of a high hill, directly south, about a mile and a half from the ford, and pointing to it, where he supposes Caesar rested his troops after the passage. Aubrey describes it a quarter of a mile from Shepperton, near the Thames, of near 30 acres, double trenched, the rampart single, neither high nor great.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SHEPPERTON, in Domesday “Scepertone,” is a village and parish on the banks of the Thames, which here divides the county from Surrey, and is the terminus of the Thames Valley branch of the South-Western railway, 2 miles east from Chertsey, 5 south-east from Staines and 18 ½ from London, in the Uxbridge division of the county, Spelthorne hundred and petty sessional division, Staines union, Chertsey county court district, and in the rural deanery of Hampton, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. Here is a lock and a ferry on the Thames. Some of the cottages are of ancient and substantial timber work, dating, probably, from the Tudor period. The church of St. Nicholas, situated close to the water’s edge, is a cruciform building of flint and rubble in the Decorated style, with the exception of the tower, which is of brick and was erected in 1710 by the Rev. Lewis Atterbury, then rector: the church consists of chancel, nave, transepts and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: the lower stage of the tower forms a porch: there are 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a rectory, yearly value £457, with 7 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1891 by the Rev. Charles Edward Littledale M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. The rectory house, which adjoins the churchyard on the north, is an old-fashioned and picturesque timber mansion faced with tiles, and has projecting wings. Good fishing may be had here, roach, barbel, perch and pike being especially plentiful. In September, 1812, an ancient canoe, 12 feet long, hewn out of a solid block of oak, was discovered in the brook near the village. Great quantities of miscellaneous articles of the British, Roman, Saxon, and later periods have been found from time to time in the bed of the Thames here. The trustees of the late Mrs. Lindsay, who are lords of the manor, Mr. George Leonard and Lord Blythswood are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are fruit, wheat, barley, oats, peas and mangold wurtzel. The area is 1,433 acres of land and 59 of water; rateable value, £8,852; the population in 1891 was 1,299.

National Schools (boys’), erected in 1860, for 100 children; average attendance, 58; (girls’ & infants’) erected in 1833, for 100 children; average attendance, 103.
