Historical Description

St. Anne, Westminster. So called from its dedication to St. Anne, and its situation, which is in Dean Street, Soho, in the liberty of Westminster.

The parish of St. Anne was taken out of that of St. Martin in the Fields by an act of parliament in the year 1661, which being found too limited to answer the purposes designed, a delay took place, in consequence of which, the church was not finished and consecrated till the 25th of March, 1685.

The organ is the gist of King William III.

The living is a rectory, in the gift of the Bishop of London, said to be worth £500 per annum.

Rector, Rev. Dr. Macleod.-Lecturer, Rev. Mr. Marsh.-Officiating parish clerk, Mr. Davies. Divine service at 11, half past 3, and half past 6.

Open vestry.-2 bells.-About 1500 houses.

There are two schools in this parish for poor children, which were founded in the year 1697.

Against the tower of this church is a tablet to the memory of Theodore Anthony Newhoff, king of Corsica, who died in the year 1756, in a state of poverty, with the following inscription:-

The grave, great teacher, to a level brings
Heroes and beggers, aglley slaves, and kings.
But Theodore this mortal learn'd ere dead,
Fate pour'd its lessons on his living head,
Bestow'd a kingdom, and denied him bread.

This parish begins at St. Gile's pound, and takes in the westerly side of Crown street, the westerly side of Cock lane, or Little St. Martin's lane; the westerly side of Great Newport street, the west side of Castle street to Bear street end, and the north side of Bear street; the north and west sides of Leicester square, the north side of Spur street, the east side of Whitecomb street, Prince's street, Wardour street, and the south side of Oxford street, to St. Giles' pound again: including all the streets, &c. in this compass.
