SOUTH MIMMS is a large parish on the west side of the road from London to St. Albans, 6 ½ miles from St. Albans, 2 miles west from the Potters-Bar station on the Great Northern railway, 3 miles north-by-west from Barnet and 14 ½ miles from London, in the Enfield division of the county, Edmonton hundred, South Mimms petty sessional division, Barnet union and county court district, Enfield rural deanery, Middlesex archdeaconry and diocese of London. The water supply is derived from works at Potters Bar, the property of the New Barnet Gas and Water Company. The parish is governed by the South Mimms Rural District Council. A stream, called “Trotter’s Brook,” flows through the parish. The church of St. Giles, a building of flint and Ted brick in the Perpendicular style, consists of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle and a tall and massive embattled western tower with angle turret containing a clock and 6 bells: the church was for the most part erected about 1350, but the north aisle was built in 1526: the church was restored in 1868, under the direction of the late G. E. Street esq. R.A,; the rood loft staircase remains in the south wall and the chancel retains an Early English piscina; here also, on the north side, is a canopied altar tomb in the Renaissance style, elaborately wrought and bearing the initials R.H.: another and similar tomb, of Caen stone; also canopied, bears the recumbent effigy of a knight in armour, of the Frowyk family, who formerly resided in this parish, and there are brasses with effigies to Thomas Frowyk esq. ob. 1448, Elizabeth his widow and 19 children, with an inscription in Latin verse: and others with inscriptions and shields of arms to Henry Frowyk and to Roger Hodsden, ob. 1606, Joan, his wife and 10 children: the Frowyk chapel, in the north aisle, was restored in 1898: the font is Early English: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. P. Hamond, 20 years vicar of the parish, and some interesting fragments of pre-Reformation glass remain in the windows of the north aisle: the church will seat about 450 persons. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £260, with residence, in the gift of W. P. Hamond esq. and held since 1898 by the Rev. Allan Hay B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. The Marquess of Salisbury K.G. is impropriator of the great tithes. The parish room, built in 1889, is a structure of brick, licensed for music and dramatic entertainments, and containing reading rooms and a library: it will hold 200 persons. Christ Church, Barnet, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1852 from the civil parish of South Mimms; the church, in the New road, Barnet, is a building of flint, with quoins and dressings of stone, in the Early English style, designed by the late Sir Gilbert Scott kt. R.A. consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, south aisle and south porch, with a turret at the west end containing one bell: it was built chiefly at the cost of the late Capt. John Trotter, of Dyrham Park (d. 1870), and was opened in 1845 and consecrated in 1852: there is a memorial window, erected by his brother officers, to Major Peter Wade Copeland Crawford, 7th Batt. King’s Royal Rifle Corps, who was killed at Benin in 1897: there are 700 sittings, of which 200 are free. The register dates from the year 1853. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £250, with residence, in the gift of, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Henry Trotter M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1891 was 3,366. On Hadley Green, in this parish, is an obelisk, commemorating the battle of Barnet, with the following inscription: “Here was fought the famous battle between Edward IV. and the Earl of Warwick, April 14th, 1471, in which the Earl was defeated and slain. This was erected in 1740, by Sir Jeremy Sambrook.’' The obelisk has, however, been moved from the place where it was first set up and has never correctly marked the true site of the conflict. There are five almshouses for women, built by Join Howick Howkins and others and partly endowed with £350 yearly, derived from Wrotham Park and other sources; each inmate receives 30s. and a ton of coals yearly: the charity is managed by the vicar and churchwardens. The Brewers’ almshouses, founded in 1687 by James Hickson and removed in 1856 by the Brewers' Company, who are the trustees of the charity, from Kitt’s end, between Dancer’s Hill and Hadley, to their present site, near the church, afford room for six widows, each with an allowance of seven shillings per week and two tons of coal yearly, besides an additional five shillings per week from J. Pooley esq.: the Brewers' Company also give in addition underclothing and material for gowns. The Small-pox Hospital, first established in 1746 on Highgate hill, was removed here in 1896; the building, formerly known as “Clare Hall,” stands in about 70 acres of meadow land, and a new building for patients is now (1898) being erected in the grounds. The public vaccination station is still at 29 St. John’s villas, Holloway road; resident medical officer, Edward Carnall M.R.C.S. and Miss J. Hicks, matron. The market, granted by charter Henry II. and revived April 16th, 1851, is held on the premises connected with the Green Man inn, High street, Barnet. Frederick Trotter D.L., J.P. includes a large rectangular mansion in the Classic style, built by Mr. John Trotter at the beginning of the present century, and standing in a park of about 170 acres, through which flows a small stream. Bridge Foot, the seat of Charles Hesse Cock esq. J.P. has grounds of about 160 acres: the entrance gate is said to have been originally erected in London by General Monk in 1660, on the occasion of the public entry of Charles II. into the city on his restoration. The Marquess of Salisbury K.G. who is lord of the manor, the Earl of Strafford, Lieut.-Col. Trotter D.L., J.P. and the trustees of the late Horatio Kemble esq. J.P. are the chief landowners.
