Historical Description

Stains is about 17 miles distant from London and six miles from Windsor. The church has a tower, which is said to have been designed by Inigo Jones, who resided some time in this town.

Here is an elegant stone-bridge consisting of three elliptic arches; that in the centre 60 feet wide, the others 52 feet each. The expence of it, according to contract, was 8, 400l.

At some distance above the bridge, at Colne Ditch, stands what is called London Mark-stone, which is the ancient boundary to the jurisdiction of the city of London on the Thames. On a moulding round the upper part, is inscribed "God preserve the city of London. A. D. 1280."

"An Pontes of the Itinerary has been placed at Stanes by Stukely, but by Horsley at Old Windsor. The Thames running in more streams than one near that place would require several bridges.

Dr, Stukely says Stanes was ditched round, and traces a Roman road pointing to Stanes bridge, and from it to Turmham Green, at which last place was found, 1731, an urn full of Roman coins. It crosses a little brook, called from it Stanford Bridge, comes into the Acton road at a common, so along Hyde Park wall, and crosses Watling Street about Tybourn. Unlaf came A. D. 999, with 93 ships to this place, and after laying waste the country about it proceeded to Sandwich and Ipswich. A. D. 1009 an army of Danes, after burning Oxford, returned along the Thames, and hearing that an army was coming against them, passed the river at this town, and, after ravaging the country all the winter, went into Kent about Lent, to repair their ships."—Gough’s Addition to Camden.

The weekly market is on Friday. The two fairs on the days mentioned in our list.

Staines is a lordship of the crown, and governed by two constables, with four head-boroughs appointed by the king’s stewards.

The town has been much improved, and the market-house, which stood in the middle of the high road, removed to one side. The Thames is here about 180 feet broad.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

STAINES is a union town and parish, on the east bank of the river Thames, where the Colne falls into it, and on the Great Western road, with a station on the Windsor branch of the London and South Western railway: the Great Western railway have also a branch from West Drayton, with a terminal station here, opened in Sept. 1885; it is 6 miles south-east from Windsor, 9 south from Uxbridge and 19 from London by rail, 16 ½ by road, in the Uxbridge division of the county, Spelthorne hundred and petty sessional division, Chertsey county court district, rural deanery of Hampton, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The distance from Staines Bridge to London Bridge by land is 20 miles, and owing to the circuitous course of the Thames 34 by water. A handsome stone bridge of three arches, erected in 1832, at a cost of about £70,000, and opened by William IV. and Queen Adelaide, connects Staines with Egham. Staines being a lordship of the Crown is not incorporated; it was formerly governed by a Local Board, formed in 1872, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), is now controlled by an Urban District Council; it is within the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan police. The town and neighbourhood is supplied with water, derived from the chalk, by the South-West Suburban Water Company, formed in the year 1883, the works being at Egham, and is lighted with gas by a company formed in 1871. Staines is said to derive its name from the boundary stone, dated 1285, standing in a meadow above the bridge, and marking the ancient jurisdiction of the city of London over the western portion of the river Thames. This memorial was repaired in 1781, during the mayoralty of Sir Watkin Lewis kt. and placed on a pedestal raised on three steps: the pedestal bears the names of various Lord Mayors who have visited the spot. The chinch of St. Mary the Virgin, which occupies the site of the ancient church, built in 675, was erected (with the exception of the tower) in 1631, and is an edifice of brick with York stone dressings, in a debased Gothic style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of brick, with crocketed pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 bells; the tower was built by Inigo Jones in 1631 and enlarged and repaired in 1828: in the churchyard is buried Letitia, wife of Sir John Lade kt. once coachman to the Prince Regent: the interior was restored in 1885, the chancel extended, and its roof raised: in the chancel are three stained windows, one of which was presented by the late Emperor Frederick III. of Germany and the Empress Frederick, in memory of Miss Byng: there are 720 sittings. The register dates from the year 1692. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £443, with glebe (£61) and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1873 by the Rev. John Hopkins Armstrong M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The parish church of St. Peter, Laleham road, erected at a cost of £10,000, entirely contributed by Sir Edward Clarke Q.C., M.P. and consecrated by the Bishop of Marlborough, August 30, 1894, is an edifice of red brick and stone in the Perpendicular style, from designs by Mr. G. H. Fellows Prynne, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower, and will seat 600 persons: the choir stalls were presented by Sir E. Clarke, the altar and altar hangings by Lady Clarke, and the window in the south aisle by W. B. Puckle esq. The register dates from the year 1880. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £175, in the gift of Sir Edward Clarke Q.C., M.P. and held since 1889 by the Rev. George Villiers Briscoe, of the University of London. The Catholic chapel is in Gresham road; there is also a Congregational chapel, seating 350 persons, Baptist chapel, built in 1837, and a Wesleyan chapel, in the Kingston road, with a tower and spire, erected in 1889—90, at a cost of £4,000, and affording 532 sittings. The meeting house of the Society of Friends, in the High street, built about 1842, will seat 200. The Salvation Army barracks are in Kingston road. The cemetery, comprising 1a. 2r. and 27p. was consecrated July, 1880, and adjoins the churchyard: it is under the control of the Urban District Council of 12 members. The Town Hall, in the Market square, erected in 1880—1, is a structure of white brick with Beer stone dressings, surmounted on the north front by a turret containing a chiming clock with three illuminated dials: the large hall is 72 feet long, 45 feet wide and 32 feet high: it has a raised stage and gallery, and will hold 499 persons: the building also contains the Urban District Council and surveyor's offices, and over these a Council room; the rest of the building comprises dressing, retiring and waiting rooms, with lavatories and caretaker’s apartments. There are two banks, viz. that of Messrs Thomas Ashby and Co. and a branch of the London and Provincial Bank Limited. The brewery of Messrs, Charles Ashby and Company Limited, the brewery of Thomas Fladgate Harris, the Linoleum Manufacturing Co. and the mustard mills of Messrs. Finch, Rickman and Co. afford employment for many persons. Two pleasure fairs are held, one on the 11th of May, and the other on the 19th of September. Two newspapers are published here, the Middlesex and Surrey Express, weekly, and the West Middlesex Times, bi-weekly. The E Company of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Duke of Cambridge’s Own Middlesex Regiment has its head quarters in the town. There are several charities and gifts in connection with this parish, distributed in money, bread, meat and coals, varying in amounts. Staines was identical with the Roman station “Ad Pontes,” and various remains of the Roman period have been met with in the vicinity, as well as axe-heads and other relics of an earlier date. The new rifle range for the Metropolitan Volunteers and others, situated in this parish, was formed by the Metropolitan Rifle Range Co. Lim, and opened in 1892. The property acquired for the purpose is two and a half miles in length, and from one mile to half a mile in width; there are 70 targets with ranges from 100 to 1,200 yards, a camping ground, canteen, pavilion &c.; a station called “Runnymede Range,” has been erected by the Great Western Co. within 3 minutes’ walk of this range, on their branch from West Drayton. In the immediate neighbourhood, but in the parish of Egham, Surrey, is Runnymede, the place where the barons assembled to force from King John the great charter, known as “Magna Charta,” sealed 12th June, 1215, as some say, on a small island, now called “Magna Charta Island,” opposite Ankerwyke. Duncroft House stands near the church on the site of an ancient building, in which King John is said to have slept the night after he signed “Magna Charta”; it is a picturesque mansion in the Elizabethan or Early Jacobean style, with some fine oak chimney-pieces, once belonging to Lord Cranstoun, and is now occupied by John Mitchel Chapman esq. J.P. Thorncote is the charming river side residence of Sir Edward Clarke Q.C., M.P. Capt. Sir Charles Gibbons bart. R.N., D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor, Harmer Honner esq. Messrs. Reffell and John Ashby esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The “Pack Horse” hotel, pleasantly seated on the river bank, and the “Swan,” on the opposite bank, and close to the bridge, are both much patronised by boating parties and anglers. The Staines and Egham Hythe Constitutional Club of 300 members is in Market square. The commons in Staines, covering 350 acres, are now subject to the Metropolitan Commons Act, 1866 and 1869, and a scheme has been sanctioned for their management, under the control of the Urban District Council. The soil is alluvial; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and beans. The area is 1,834 acres of land and 74 water; rateable value, £37,411; the population in 1871 was 3,659, in 1881 4,638, and in 1891 5,060, now (1898) about 6,000.

Runnymede, already alluded to, and one of the most important and interesting of our historic sites, is a meadow of about 160 acres, lying north of Egham, and between it and the river: the name has been derived from the Maeso-Gothic “runa,” a council, and hence “the council meadow”; another suggested derivation is from the Latin “runcare,” to clear a field of brambles, by the Gauls called “ronces.” Various conferences were held by the barons at different places with reference to the Great Charter, and on 6 Jan. 1215, they presented their demands to the King at London: some delay then occurred, but eventually the Charter was ratified and formally sealed at Runnimede on the 12 June following. The local tradition that this took place on a small island, some distance higher up the river, can hardly be sustained in the face of the subscription at the end of the Charter, which runs thus:-“Data per manum nostram in prato quod vocatur Runimede inter Windleshoram et Stanes”; this fable probably took its rise in 1834, when G. S. Harcourt esq. then lord of the manor, constructed a bridge from the mainland to the island, and erecting on the latter a sort of castellated cottage, placed in it a framed octagonal stone tablet, bearing an inscription to the effect that the Charter was signed on this island.

Hammonds farm, 1 mile north, in Stanwell parish, Duncroft, Shortwood Common, half a mile east, and Withygate Field, 2 miles south-east on the road to Sunbury, are other places.
