Historical Description

STANWELL is a pleasant village and parish, intersected by the Longford stream flowing through Bushey Park, 1 ½ miles north from Ashford station on the Windsor branch of the South Western railway and 2 south-east from Colnbrook station on the Great Western railway, 15 from London and 2 ½ north-east from Staines, in the Uxbridge division of the county, Spelthorne hundred and petty sessional division, Staines union, Chertsey county court district, rural deanery of Hampton, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone and flint, in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with aisle, clerestoried nave of four hays, aisles, a picturesque wooden porch on the north side, and a low western tower of chequer work with lofty octagonal shingled spire, containing a clock and 5 bells: on the north side of the chancel is a stately monument of marble, with life-sized kneeling effigies to Sir Thomas Knyvett kt. first and only Baron Knyvett, ob. 27 July, 1622, and Elizabeth (Hayward) his wife, who died in the same year: here was also a canopied monument to Thomas Windsor, ob. 1486, but this has now disappeared: on the south side are two stone stalls, a piscina and an arcade of eight recessed seats, supposed to have been anciently used by the monks of Chertsey abbey: the north aisle was rebuilt in 1863, at which time the church was thoroughly restored: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1632. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £196, net yearly value £210, with 6 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Edgar Huxtable B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Dr. Bruno Ryves, author of “Mercurius Rusticus,” was vicar here during the civil war, when he was deprived, but was replaced at the Restoration, and died 13 July, 1677. Staines Union Workhouse, in this parish, is 1 mile south from the village, and on the high road to Staines. Stanwell Moor is about a mile and a half west, and by fieldpath 1 mile north from Staines, and has a large flour mill. Stanwell Place, the seat of Sir Charles Gibbons bart. D.L., J.P. is surrounded by a beautifully wooded park of about 100 acres, through which flows a small stream supplied by the river Colne. Sir C. Gibbons bart. who is lord of the manor, John Hambrough esq. and the Staines Joint Reservoir Co. are the principal landowners. The soil is principally gravel; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips, beans and peas. The area is 3,783 acres of land and 52 water; rateable value, £11,418; the population in 1891 was 2,383, inclusive of officers and inmates of the Staines workhouse, excluding Colnbrook.

National Endowed (boys), built & endowed in 1624 by the trustees of Thomas, Lord Knyvett, who died 27 July, 1622, for 102 children; average attendance, 78; the endowment produces a yearly income of £70.

National (girls & infants), erected in 1871, for 103 girls & 97 infants; average attendance, 61 girls & 58 infants.
