Teddington Church is a small brick structure, consisting of a chancel, a nave, and two aisles. The east window has the appearance of considerable antiquity. There are many interesting monuments and memorials in this church; among them are the following:
Is ear the communion-table the monument of Sir Orlando Bridgeman, an eminent lawyer, who died 25th June, 1674. Oft the cast wall of the north aisle the monument of Margaret Woffington, a celebrated actress, who died the 18th Oct. 1720, aged 39 years; and in the vestry the tomb of Dr. Stephen Hales, who was clerk of the closet to the late Princess of Wales, and minister of this parish 51 years. He died the 4th of January 1761, aged 84 years. Dr. Hales is well known in the literary world, by his excellent treatises on statics, his book on ventilators, and several other valuable publications. TEDDINGTON, anciently called “Tuddington” and “Totington,” is a pleasant village and parish on the high road from Richmond bridge to Hampton Court through Bushey Park, and has a station on the Kingston extension line in connection with the North London and South Western railways, and is 1 ½ miles north from Kingston, 2 south from Twickenham and 12 from Hyde Park Comer, in the Uxbridge division of the county, Spelthorne hundred and petty sessional division, Kingston union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Hampton, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London: it is close to the river Thames: the second (originally the first) lock on the river, 17 miles above Westminster Bridge, is placed here, and has been rebuilt in masonry and a small pound made adjoining the larger one for the passage of pleasure boats, which thus pass through in about three minutes, small boats being lifted over; this lock is the limit of the port of London in this direction; the first lock now is the new tidal lock at Richmond: the spring tides of the lower river still flow up to Teddington, and by the “Metropolitan Water Act, 1852” (15 & 16 Vict. c. 84), the intake of all the London Water Companies must be above it; the lock cut on the Surrey side is spanned by an iron girder bridge, 99 feet in clear length, carried on concrete abutments, with an elevation of 12 feet clear above the towing path and 18 feet above the water; connected with this bridge and crossing the river at a point near the “Anglers’ Hotel” is an iron suspension bridge for foot passengers, of 160 feet span, on the Teddington side, and a half span towards the island on the Surrey side; the footway, 6 feet in width, is 12 feet above the water; both bridges were erected in 1889 at a cost of about £2,700, from designs by Mr. George Pooley, engineer, of London. The parish was under the government of a Local Board of 15 members, formed in 1867, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), it is now controlled by an Urban District Council: it is lighted with gas from works at Hampton Wick and supplied with water by the Grand Junction Water Works Company. The former parish church of St. Mary occupied the site of an ancient chapel belonging to the Abbey of Westminster: the present edifice, a structure of brick, possesses neither beauty nor antiquity; it has been added to from time to time, and) consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells: the oldest part is the south aisle, which appears to be of the Caroline period; the chancel is in the Decorated style: in 1877 the interior was entirely renovated at a cost of £1,200 raised by subscription, and an organ was added: the church contains tablets to many distinguished characters buried here, among which is one to Sir Orlando Bridgeman kt. and bart. chief justice of the Common Pleas and lord keeper of the seals to Charles II. d. 25 June, 1674; there are others to Margaret Woffington, the celebrated actress, d. 28 March, 1760, and to John Walter esq. the founder and principal proprietor of “The Times,” who died here 16 Nov. 1812; on the south wall is a brass to John Goodyere, ob. 1506, and Thomasyne his wife; and in the chancel is a brass to the Rev. The altar ornaments in this chapel are ancient Florentine work, and those of the communion are copies, made by Italian artists, of some in the Certosa of Pavia. The seven lamps, presented by the Orthodox Patriarch at Jerusalem, are of Russian workmanship, except the centre one, which is Venetian, and until their transmission to Teddington had been hanging in the (reputed) sepulchre of Our Lord: an organ was added in 1898, and a fine pulpit is now (1898) in course of erection: there are 900 sittings. E. Street esq. R.A. erected at a cost of £15,000; and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles and a western turret containing 1 bell: all the windows are stained, and include memorial windows to the Rev. W.
