Historical Description

WEST DRAYTON is a village and parish, with a station on the main line of the Great Western railway, which has branch lines from here to Uxbridge and Staines, and is 3 miles south from Uxbridge, 6 north-west from Hounslow and 13 from London: the parish is in the Uxbridge division of the county, Elthorne hundred, Uxbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Uxbridge, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London: the Grand Junction Canal passes by this parish, and the river Colne divides the parish from Bucks. The village is supplied with water by the Rickmansworth and Uxbridge Valley Water Works Co. The church of St. Martin is an edifice of stone and flint in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a massive western tower with wooden turret, containing a clock and 6 bells: the east window, filled with Decorated tracery, and four others are stained: the font has an octagonal panelled basin, with carvings of the “Crucifixion,” “Our Lady of Pity,” and other subjects: in the chancel are monuments to the De Burgh and Paget families; and brasses to Richard Roos, citizen and mercer of London, ob. 1406; his daughter Anna, and Anna, daughter of Thomas Roos; Robert Machell, ob. 1557; and John Goode M.D. of Magdalen College, Oxford, ob. 1581, and Joan (Glinton), his wife: a handsome brass eagle lectern has been presented by Lady Marion Buchanan: the church, with the exception of the tower, was restored and re-seated in 1850, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £285, including 75 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Leycester and Miss de Burgh, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Arthur Wm. Septimus Albert Row M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Catherine, and in the centre of the village, facing the Green, was built in 1868—9, is an edifice in the Gothic style of the 13th century, from designs by S. J. Nicholl esq. architect, of London, and consists of chancel, with side chapels, inclosed by open traceried stone screens, baptistery, nave, aisles and vestries: in 1866 a costly high altar of stone, marble and alabaster was erected, and a fine canopied reredos, extending the whole width of the chancel, with recessed panelling, richly decorated with paintings by Mr. Joseph Bouvier: the east window is stained, and there are several others, including a memorial window in the Lady chapel, and one window in the baptistery, which also contains a sculptured font, inclosed by a wrought-iron screen. The Baptist chapel, erected in 1827 and enlarged in 1839, is an edifice of brick, with stone dressings, and there is also a Mission room. Here are paper mills and a brewery. The charities include £560 Government stock, the interest of which is distributed in bread and money to the poor, at the discretion of the vicar and trustees, and the interest on £300 left by William Batt esq. which is distributed at Christmas in blankets and coals. The gate house of the old manor house, an ancient rectangular structure of brick of the Tudor period, with a fine entrance arch retaining its original oak door, and flanked by low octagonal embattled towers, is now the residence of J. Langton Barnard esq. Mrs. Leycester and Miss De Burgh, of 61 Eccleston square, London W, who are ladies of the manor, and certain members of the Batt family, are the principal landowners.
