Historical Description

Wilsdon Church is an ancient Gothic structure, consisting of a chancel, nave, and south aisle, with circular pillars and pointed arches. On the east wall of the chancel is the monument of Sir John Franklyn, Knt. with the following inscription:

"Here lyeth ye body of Sir John Francklyn, late of Wilsden in the countie of Middlesex, knight, who had to wife Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of George Purefoy, of Wadley, in the county of Berks, Esq. It was her happiness to make him the joyfull father of 10 sons and 7 daughters, and it is her pietie to dedicate this monument to ye preservation of his memory.

He died in ye 48 year of his age, March ye 24, 1647. In four several parliaments he sat as member of ye House of Commons; three as knight of the shire for this countie. He was never heard to swear an oath; never to speak ill of any man. He was wiser in the opinion of others than his own. To public services no man brought more integrity of zeal, lesse of himselfe. To the publicke sins and calamities of ye state no man less of fewell, more of sorrow. To his wife a man could not be more loving, more faithful. To his children and servants more fatherly; to his friends more free, more firm. He was truly eminently pious, humble, sober, just, hospitable, and charitable. These things, reader, it concerned thee to know of him. For that by these he still lives; and being dead yet speaketh. Farewell."

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WILLESDEN is a large parish and head of a petty sessional division and union (formed in 1896), about 5 miles north-west from the Marble Arch, lying high, and contains the source of some feeders of the river Brent and is in the North Western Metropolitan postal district, Harrow division of the county, Ossulstone hundred, county court district of Marylebone, rural deanery of Harrow, archdeaconry of Middlesex and diocese of London; there is an important junction station here of the North Western and North London railways and of the railways south of the Thames via the West London and North and South Western Junction railways; the station is locally in Harlesden, 1 ½ miles south from Willesden old church; there are likewise stations in the parish at Stonebridge Park and Dudding Hill, both on the Midland railway. The Metropolitan extension railway has a station at Willesden Green, about 1 ½ miles from Willesden junction, and also a station at Neasden. The parish was governed by a Local Board, formed in 1875 by 37 and 38 Vict. c. 42, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), the parish is now controlled by an Urban District Council of 21 members: the district is divided into seven wards. The area of the Urban District was extended by Local Government Board Order 14,714, dated June 14, 1883, “confirming agreement as to boundaries under the Willesden Local Board Act, 1876.” The West Middlesex Water Works supply the parish, and have a reservoir here capable of holding 2,000,000 gallons: the principal roads are lighted with gas by the Gas Light and Coke Company. The parish church of St. Mary is a building of flint, stone, brick, and tooled stone of considerable antiquity, and contains fragments of all styles since the Conquest, but has suffered much from additions and restorations; it consists of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled tower at the west end of the south aisle containing a clock and 6 bells: the font is Norman: there are brasses with effigies to Bartholomew Willesden, comptroller of the great roll of the Pipe, ob. 1492, his two wives and four daughters; Margaret Roberts, ob. 1505, with six children; William Lichfield LL.D, vicar, ob. 1517; Edmund Roberts esq. of Neasden, ob. 1585, and his wives Frances (Welles) and Fayth (Patenson), with nine children; and Jane, wife of John Barne esq. ob. 1609, with two daughters: in the church are also several ancient monuments, including a mural monument in the chancel, dated 1595, to Richard Paine esq. J.P. and his wife, with kneeling figures of both; there are others to Sir John Francklyn kt. of Wilsden, ob. 1647; Richard Francklyn esq. of Wilsden, ob. 1615; John Barne esq. J.P. ob. 1615; and to Francis Roberts esq. of Wilsden, ob. 1631: the pulpit of carved oak was erected in 1877 in memory of Mary Wood by F. A. and I. E. Wood: the east and west windows are stained; and there are others, including two at the west end of the north aisle, erected by his associates in the London and County Bank, to Whitbread Tomson esq. who died 14 May, 1876, and is buried in the churchyard; in the south aisle is a memorial window and brass to his son and daughter; there are 650 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £600, including 10 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s, and held since 1888 by the Ven. Brownlow Thomas Atlay M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge and formerly archdeacon of Calcutta. St. Andrew’s is an ecclesiastical district, constituted September 17, 1880; the church, at Willesden Green, erected in 1886—7 at a cost of about £15,000, is an edifice of red brick with stone dressings, in the Lancet style, from designs by Mr. James Brooks, architect, of London, and consists of chancel, with north apsidal chapel, transepts, nave of five bays, aisles, north porch and a fleche at the intersection of the chancel and transepts, containing 1 bell: there are about 970 sittings. The register dates from the year 1886; entries from 1880 to 1886 are included in the registers of the parish church of St. Mary. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £350, with residence, in the gift of the Crown and Bishop of London, alternately, and held since 1880 by the Rev. John Arthur Rawlins M.A. of New College, Oxford. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1891 was 5,570, and is now (1898) about 10,000.

St. Gabriel’s is an ecclesiastical district formed in 1890 from the parish of St. Andrew, Willesden Green, to which was added in 1896 a large part of the parish of Christ Church, Brondesbury. The district is wholly in the civil parish of Willesden, but comprises a portion locally known as Cricklewood. The church, in Walm lane, Cricklewood, is an edifice externally of stone and internally of brick, consisting, at present, of chancel, nave of three bays, side chapel and two vestries; two bays of the nave and a tower and spire are to be added: there are at present 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1891. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £200, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1898 by the Rev. George Marsh Clibborn M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, curate in charge from 1891. The population in 1898 was estimated at about 5,000. The original temporary St. Gabriel’s iron church, in Chichele road, is now used as a Parish Room. The Congregational chapel, at Queenstown, erected in 1878, has 500 sittings. A new cemetery of 20 acres, abutting on the Cobbold road, was opened April 4, 1893, and has two chapels, with a central tower. The Jews’ cemetery, in Pound lane, comprises 12 acres, with a waiting room, mortuary, and superintendent’s residence and chapel of Kentish rag-stone. The Willesden Green Public Library, erected at a cost of about £2,100, contains 8,114 volumes. The Cottage Hospital in Harlesden road, erected in 1893 at a cost of about £2,000, subscribed by Mr. Passmore Edwards, is a structure of red brick consisting of two wards of four beds each, a private ward, operating room, and apartments for nurses. An additional sum of nearly £2,000 was publicly subscribed, part of which was expended on appliances and furniture. Willesden Urban District Council Isolation Hospital, Dog lane, is an edifice of red brick, standing in grounds of 4 ½ acres, was completed in 1894, at a cost of £20,000: it contains 3 wards, including one for isolation: the original iron temporary buildings are retained, one of them for patients and the other for night nurses’ dormitory, with a room for religious services. The National Athletic grounds of 27 acres, adjoining Kensal Rise station, were laid out in 1890. A recreation ground was laid out in 1894 and adjoins the new cemetery with entrance in Harlesden road; it covers an area of about 26 acres, and has cost about £20,000. Several of the roads in the parish have been planted with trees. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The land is principally in pasturage; but a great part of it has been acquired by various land companies, who are laying it out for building purposes. The parish comprises an area of 4,302 acres of land and 81 of water; rateable value, £430,355; the population in 1871 was 15,869, in 1881, 27,397, and in 1891, 61,265, and is still increasing at the rate of 4,000 persons a year. The population attached to the parish church in 1891 was 6,963.

The following places are included in the division:-Acton, Chiswick & Willesden.

Willesden & Harlesden &c. were part of Hendon Union till October 1896, but subsequently formed into a separate parish for purposes of the Poor Law.
