Historical Description
ALDBOROUGH is a parish and considerable village, around an extensive green, 5 miles north from Aylsham stations on the Great Eastern railway and Midland and Great Northern joint railway, and 7 south-west from Cromer, in the Northern division of the county. North Erpingham hundred and petty sessional division, Erpingham union. Holt county court district, rural deanery of Repps and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The river Bure, which is navigable up to Aylsham, runs near the parish. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of flint, with stone dressings, in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and has one bell, hung externally at the west end: it was restored in 1849 at a cost of £750: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. J. G. Nelson, late rector, who died in 1882, and was erected by his friends at a cost of £100: there are several tablets to the Gay family, dating from 1792: and a brass to Anne Holkard, wife of Robert Holkard, ob. 1st January, 1485, besides two brass effigies, one of a knight in armour and the other a civilian in fur-lined robe and carrying a dagger: under the font, there is the matrix of a missing brass, and an inscription corresponding to the vacant space to Richard Ricards esq. 1492 (or 3); another recorded brass, dated 1427, is either lost or hidden under the floor of a gallery: the rood stairs, two piscinae, sedilia and a stoup remain. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £148, gross yearly value £198, with residence and 25 acres of glebe in the gift of trustees, and held since 1889 by the Rev. John William Nesbit M.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. The Temperance Hall, erected in 1884, is a structure of brick, and will seat 300 persons. A sub-branch of Gurney’s (now Barclay and Co. Limited) Bank, has been opened here. A stock fair is held here on the 21st and 22nd of June, unless the 21st falls on Saturday or Sunday, in which event it is held on the following Monday and Tuesday. Aldborough New Hall, the seat of James Gay esq. J.P. the principal landowner, is a modern building standing in its own grounds. Aldborough is principally in the manor of Hanworth, of which Lord Suffield K.C.B., P.C. is lord. Messrs. Herbert Cook, of Thwaite, and James Bone are also landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, principally brick earth, though some of it is gravel; it is farmed on the four-course, or Norfolk system. The area is 795 acres; rateable value, £1,838; the population in 1891 was 323.
